For Xi Drives

XI OWNERS ONLY, PLEASE

I am curious about how many xi drivers only change to snow tires in the winter.

I don't see a need.

Please explain your votes.

Your poll might be a little skewed because of XI owners like me who have the 18" wheels with performance tires. We have to swap tires - we have no choice.

Do you want us to refrain from voting?

Snow tires make you stop better. corner, and accelerate in snow and ice.

I think per the instructions, we just have to explain our vote - which both of us just did.

I have all season tire, and BMW told me that "all season" means that tire can also run on snow, so there is no need to change to snow tire. Of coz, I am in bay area, so i dont know if he is telling truth or not. But those tire did a good job when I went to lake tahoe at the pass winter.

Thank you for pointing that out.

Yes, xi owners with the 18 inch wheels should not vote.

"Snow tires make you stop better. corner, and accelerate in snow and ice".

Yes, and chains would help more too.

I take it your not an xi owner?

No one is arguing that.

I´m sure a decent %age of 330xi´s come with Styling 162 wheels so you will probably end up with such owners voting regardless of instructions.

Perhaps if the poll differentiated, i.e.
- I have 17" AS tires and change to winter tires
- I have 18" performance tires and...

I think my intent should have been clean.

If you have 18s and don't live in Cal. or Fla.

You have to switch to snow tires.

Does not bother me if your intent was dirty or clean but you asked a simple question, I am curious about how many xi drivers only change to snow tires in the winter.

I voted and yes I have 18" tires. I cannot retract my vote and there are no instructions in the initial post.

So if you are saying your intent was clear (or clean) for only all season tire owners to vote, I can tell you it was not clear at all.

You asked who changes, and to explain our votes.

I change in December, and back in March.

Snow tires help my 325xi E90, start, stop, and turn better in snow and ice. Could I be any clearer?

I use chains on my farm truck in winter to help it back up the hill when I dump the horse manure every couple of days. They are amazing.

Anyway, this snow tire/xi or i debate has been regurgitated in so many forms since I first found bimmerfest, why start it again?

I did not see anything on just "xi owners with 17 inch tires."

Did You?

I just wanted to see who has a xi with 17 inch wheels who drive in bad weather and are going to buy snow tires.

Not people in Cal. and Fla.

All the ones I have seen are which one is best.

I think this poll has already been spoiled.

I will start the poll over.

Thanks for everyones input.

I live in CA, so my opinion is apparently useless to you, but I'm giving it anyway! The reason why I even bought an xi, is so I can slap snows on there for the snowboarding season and take that baby up to the slopes. Here in CA, you aren't required to use chains in the Sierras if you have AWD and snows on.

I got the sport package with upgraded rims with performance tires... so for the winter, I'm getting snows for my stock 17" rims and new 19's wrapped in performance tires for regular street use when I'm not headed for the slopes.

I voted for no need of snow tires. I have an XI and it had no issues this past winter. Keep in mind it was a very light winter here in N.E.

Live in CT up a steep hill and steep private drive. Probably a couple of days each winter that I wouldn't get home without snows and xi but that is too many. Every article I read says snow tires are better that awd and although I don't believe everything I read, I do think they make a difference. My wife has a e46 325xit and got the snows off a couple of days too early one year and it made a major difference in traction.
So I guess it depends upon where you drive. For me there is no such thing as too much winter traction.

I just got my xi in March and haven't had the experience of driving in the snow. I have the 17" all season tires and I don't plan on changing to snow tires in the winter. Looking forward to comparing my experiences with Audi's Quattro and BMW's XI. If my A4 was able to cut through the snow with performance tires, I am sure this car can too with all season tires. If not, then I know which dealership I am going to when the lease is up.

Snow tires for me - safer and better performance all around. I will not get stuck on my way to a powder day! My dealer said "Sir, You'll never need snow tires again!" Totally inaccurate and frankly, a stupid thing to say.

when temperature gets close to 0° C., whatever wet or dry road, no tyre can compete with winter tyres

You are still required to carry chains, even with AWD & snows. I've been through chain control a number of times in my AWD Audi (with summer tires) and never had them give me any trouble about using chains (despite my summer itres), but they do insist that you carry chains.

FWIW, I've never felt the need for snows with my Audi.
