135i and towing
Hey guys so i have my ltr suzuki which weighs about 700lbs. at the most and a 5x8 trailer to hold it which weighs roughly 500-700lbs, so my main question is, is this hitch all i need to tow my trailer??
Will i need anything else? if so can someone send me a link to the whole kit, i had to buy a truck but decided to opp out and get the 135i so i got to work my way around it http://www.autoaccessoriesgarage.com...Receiver-Hitch Please nobody come in here and tell me it cant be done or its bad and if they do explain your logic, i will be drviing the car slowly and the commute is only about 50 minutes to the park and 50 minutes back and keep in mind its easily under 2000lb which im sure this car can handle easily. And here some pics of my baby (07 ltr 450) Tuned making about 78hp on the dyno for all you other atv users on here Last edited by M3_wannabe; 07-18-2013 at 11:09 PM.. |

I have a SUV so I use that for towing. I agree 1500-2000 lbs isn't unreasonable for a 3300 lbs vehicle with 300 hp to tow but without trailer brakes, your stopping distances will be MUCH longer. My SUV is about 4000 lbs and I notice 2000 lbs behind it. If you are going to do this a lot, especially at higher speeds, you might want to consider surge brakes on the trailer. A common limit for towing without trailer brakes is 750kg or 1500 lbs. You are going to be pretty close to that.

You know pinching off your water hose like that isnt good for the hose. How would you feel if you got ran over like that? LOL
Not a problem on the tow package. how you pack the trailer will be key. Not too much tounge weight and you will be fine. usually try to balance the weight front to rear on the trailer so that there isnt a lot of down force on the tow hitch. For that reason while you are driving down the highway you shocks and such arnt feeling the real load of the trailer. Your trans and engine will handle it as long as you dont try to race anyone with that Hose crusher hooked to your rear.

I don't plan to do it a lot just 2-3x's a month max, and honestly the 135i weighs about the same if not even heavier then my grandfathers 99 nissan frontier 4/cylinder, which he lets me use rarely to tow but its annoying going through that process with him because his truck is so old and high mileage and what not. His car is very maneagable with the trailer and atv and is a nissan shitty little truck with 150hp

Also guys is that link that i posted all i will need? Do you guys think to much strain will be on the vehicles axles and what not? Again just to remind you the weight will be for sure under 2k roughly 1400-1600lb's and only 2-3 times a month. The trip itself will always be the same 55 miles there and 55 back nothing more

You shouldn't break anything as long as you take it easy. You need to load the atv such that a little more than half it's weight is on the car side of the trailer, however. In other words, you need some tongue weight. I usual amount is 10%. I don't think it has to be that high but if you ever get it tail heavy - the tongue wanting to rise - it will wag as you go down the road. That is unplesant and potentially unsafe.
My SUV has a small V6 and only 185hp. So I really am sure you are fine for power, you just have to be careful and allow for longer stopping distance and don't get aggressive in your driving while towing.

Yea i plan to just load it exactly in the middle, that should put a good 50-150lbs in tounge weight. Yea i know, i just have to drive like i don't have a fast car, i'm use to that though because even with my grandfathers truck i have to drive like that, since its old and i give it my 100% to make sure nothing wrong happens with the car. For ex. giving extra braking distance and just basically cruising the whole time not changing speeds much, its on the highway like 45 miles of the trip. |
