Nothing like breaking your car in on the autobahn
I picked up my car but didnt really get to drive it yet.
Some people here know my back story for those that dont.... My Dad had bought his first BMW in Munich back in 1973 (a white 2002), he then returned a year later to purchase his 2nd BMW (an orange 2002). My first BMW was my white 135 and now I came to Munich with my Dad to pick up my 2nd BMW the orange 1M. Day 1 we arrived in Munich at 6pm and did the touristy thing visiting Marienplatz and Hofbrauhaus etc Day 2 we took a rental and drove to Neuschwanstein castle and back. Day 3 was the day at the Welt picking up my car. I waited across on the visitor platform and got some video of my car arriving. Day 4 we still had the rental so we took that to the Grossglockner and drove back passing through Gerlos (wow what a road that is!!!) Day 5 we left Munich and visited the Porsche and MBenz Museums near Stuttgart. Porsche didnt have much but wow Mercedes Benz was an amazing display. They both had gift shops to put the Welt to shame. The amount of models was overhelming. Ended up in Frankfurt Day 6 will be today... Nuburgring Attached are a few pics (front is covered in trakk tape, review of that coming separately), I will attach more pics and catch you up on day 6 soon Last edited by Papethova; 10-10-2011 at 10:49 AM.. |

Day 6 spent a few hours in the morning in Frankfurt, our room was on the river. Then headed to Nurburgring. On the way there I went through some of the strongest/heaviest rain I have ever experienced in my life (Im from California). At the Ring the rain was light but with wet roads and a brand new car I decided one lap was enough, next ED I plan to do more laps. Left the Ring and headed 2.5 hours north to Munster.
Day 7 spent the day in Munster. Day 8 was the drop off day Day 9 was spent seeing the sights in Hamburg (miniature wonderland, the harbor, the churches, rathaus, etc) Day 10 left Hamburg via train to Berlin settling into the room now. The last two pictures are of a tunnel that passes underneath the waterway in Hamburg. Elevators bring the cars up and down from the street. Amazing that it was engineered and built before 1910. Day 11 Spent the day out and about in Berlin (Sony center, Alexanderplatz, Reichstag, Brandenburg gate, the Berlin wall, checkpoint charlie, etc) I had made reservations to visit the glass dome on the roof of the Reichstag and thats where we started. I was surprised to see the imperial troops had made their way to the Brandenburg Gate LOL. The portion of wall still left standing was cool to see.
Day 12 we headed to Potsdam on the outskirts of Berlin. Spent the day touring the various tourist sites there, notably the new palace (pic attached) Day 13 it was raining and we spent it lounging and relaxing knowing we had a long day on Monday Day 14 we took the train to Leipzig to tour the plant where the 1M is built. I made arrangements to meet Dackel there and he actually picked us up at the Hbf and gave us a lift to the plant. The tour was great!! Saw a number of Ms in various stages, the VO ones stood out easily. Interesting tidbit, every 100th car is taken out back and "tested" on their track (maybe thats why some have higher delivery mileage?!?!). We did see a few F20s, they look better in person than in pics, but I still prefer the current generation. In the pic that is someones M rolling into the paint shop Day 15 (tomorrow) to the airport and back to the states Last edited by Papethova; 09-19-2011 at 01:59 PM.. |

Here's hoping that you have a "dry" day at the ring ..... certainly a highlight of my trip and I can smell the brakes and race gas just thinking about it. If you don't know the track find someone in the "staging area" to follow the first couple laps! Have fun and can't wait to see your updates!

It cost nothing, plus you get a discount on the car and BMW gives you 2 for 1 tickets through Lufthansa. ED MSRP is about 9% below US MSRP and if you can negotiate ED invoice then you save another 9-10%. All in all my car and trip together will cost me less than if I had paid MSRP and picked up my car at the dealership. |
