cupholder and airbags

I know there's been a *LOT* of posts on cupholders, but not too much on its placement vis-a-vis the passenger airbag. It can't be that BMW engineers didn't think about this problem? What happens if you have a cup of coffee (or anything else for that matter--or even worse, glass container) in the cupholder when the airbag deploys? Will the cup fly into the passenger? That can't be the right answer, can it?

Passenger airbag comes out of the top of the dash and will come out over the cupholders.

So only something really tall would get knocked out.

Also even if something is knocked out, what would you rather have, be alive with a little coffee burn, or be dead ???

Never put a glass cup/container in the cup holder per BMW manual.

have you seen the Jaguar interiors? There's a big slab of wood over there (or the Z4 with the big slab of aluminum)

I always imagine a passenger in the Jag getting slapped across the face with a slab of wood when the airbags go off (although I'm sure this wouldn't actually happen but it's a funny visual)

Airbag comes out the top of the dash near the windscreen, not by the front near the trim
