I wonder if the new M3 coupé will be heavier than the E46 M3

I think it will be lighter. I heard somewhere that the new coupe is lighter than the previous version. Thus it makes sense to apply the same thought to the
M3.

I hope so, but I wonder if the 4.0 V8 engine will be heavier than the 3.2 6

oh that's right- I totally forgot that it's got a V8 now. I kept thinkin it was the twin turbo I6. It'd be heavier then. Im now willing to bet that it will be heavier by 100-200 lbs.

Since the V10 of the E60 M5 is the same weight that the previous M5's V8, I think the German engineers can make the same trick for the coming M3...

Maybe the engine will be lighter but the car won't I guess...

Maybe a 50/75kg addition I reckon.

But going from 343 to 420? BHP and a more modern chassis etc it's going to be alright....I hope.

Yes it does. Cars are getting bigger and heavier with each modelchange because of more safety and better comfort. But they forget the handling. Look at Lotus and TVR(exaggerating a bit but you know what I mean)

Our E90 is a boat compared to the boxy E30 from 20 years ago.

~ aren't all new cars heavier... they all seem to increase in weight with the newer model.

Someday cars will weigh an infinite amount, with infinite horsepower...

The new V8 will be an aluminum block, whereas the I-6 of the E46 M3 was iron. So, the motor will be lighter (read: even BETTER weight distribution) Car is probably going to weigh about 100lbs more though, as the E90 is heavier overall than the E46; most of the weight savings the m cars possess (aluminum hood, CF, etc) at best offset the added weight of the heavier M components.

If they go whole-hog, and really go after the RS4, with aluminum subframes, CF roof, plastic bodywork, light alloy bits (nuts, bolts, etc.), keep the luxury to a minimum, then they ought to be able to get it in the 3250 lb. range. That would be awesome. 3100 would be better still, but that would be within reach for those willing to replace seats, stereo, etc.

No I meant the car.

okay I just looked up the specs on both an o4 and an 06 M5. The 04 weighs 3900lbs while the 06 M5 weighs 4059 lbs. So I might be right in guessing that the new M3 will weigh 100-200 lbs more than the current one.

Even though they're trying to make everything lighter, it's pretty much inevitable that they're always going to get heavier by the day.
