Possibly selling and need advice
I've been enjoying my 135i since it arrived last july. It's been getting tougher to cope with all of my bills due to work slowing and losing some clients. It is not a definite, but I've thought of selling my 1er for a car that can still offer close performance and fun (just less). So far the front runner (car that I always loved) is the honda s2000. I would probably look for used with low mileage 20k or less miles, yrs 2005-2008. That is front runner like I said but I wanted to get advice on what other cars that I may enjoy (preferably rwd) and priced no higher than $24k. I had an STI but want to experience something new. I'm hoping that things will turn around and I wont have to sell my baby because I absolutely love her. Thanks in advance guys

There are probably quite a few 3's out there certified pre owned that will fit the price tag miles and years if you want BMW. You could save a few pennies by finding a individual selling direct.

I wouldn't sell the 1 for reasons that others are naming, but the S2K is pretty awesome, my brother has an '06 and loves it. Much more of a strap-it-down-or-throw-it-out philosophy on the engineering in that car though- depending on your needs it may not be appropriate. Still, on a price to performance ratio, you can't do much better than a used S2K.

I think the best you could do would be a Mazdaspeed3, WRK, Civic Si. Given the fact you live in NY, a S2k might not be the most practical choice.

Unfortunately, we're in the same boat
i LOVE my 1er, but my income is about half of what it used to be and its getting kinda stressful having to juggle all this on top of going to school 18 credit hours a semester. |

honestly... I feel the same way and have considered a cheaper car. Although you buying a used car for 24k is not going to save you anything. By the time you get done selling your new car for a used car you will only end up saving a hundred bucks a month.
You prob wont get more than 30k for your car. If you really want to save money you have to look at car <20k and even then you will only save maybe 200 a month. I had an 2007 si and that thing is almost just as fast as the s2000 and you can probably pick one up for 15k mint. I dont think moving to s2000 is going to be worth the trade unlesss you just like it better or maybe are concerned with reliability. My lease will be up in less than a year on my 135 and the buyout is 26k, I am considering all possibilities. BUT unless I spend MORE... There is nothing > than the 135. I would have to buy a USED si to really save any money. Consider your options but dont get hasty cause once you give up your 135 its gone and that used s2000 will never be a potential 400hp car AND you will end up losing money by making the trade. Just my thoughts Good Luck

You can also look into a new or gently used 350z. Now that the 370's are out, the 350's still left are selling cheap cheap cheap.

Hey guys. Thanks for all of the great advice and encouraging words. Yes, I haven't driven a much better and fun car than my 1er. Also, every car that I have owned has been an upgrade and I would not want to go backwards at this point. I still have some ideas that I will try, such as refinancing with my credit union and a part time (ungh). This is just something I was kicking around and wanted to see what car could possibly be as fun for less. I will go to see if I could test drive an s2000 soon just to see how the car handles, sometime soon. This would be my fun car and I would have a beater daily. Nothing is set in stone and I'm an optimistic person, so I think that it will all work out. That's how I got my 135i in the first place. Thx guys

Do you already have said beater? Because buying 2 cars to replace one, I can't see how that would save money, especially having to insure both.
Having driven both, as far as fun factor, there will be no dropoff to the S2000- if anything, as a convertible, it may be moreso. While it doesn't have the straight line speed of the 135i, it's not that far off- you just have to choke the performance out, what with the high-revving engine delivering most of its power in the 6000+ range. Because of this, it is quickest in the 20-70mph range. The chassis is more nimble with noticeably less body roll than the 135i. The car has a neat style to it, what with the digital speedo. The 6MT is better than the 135i as well, with shorter throws. What you get with the higher price of the 135i is not performance, it is comfort and practicality- vastly more cargo room. And while I'd rather play around with the S2000 at the track, If I had to do a 3 hour drive somewhere, I'd pick the 135i easily. An S2000 will have a much harder time putting up with heavy rain or snow. Hope that helps.

I've been in this boat before. The only solution I found was to refinance & hold on to the car for a while. Eventually someone offered to buy my car at a price that would pay off my loan & give me a few bucks in the process.
I learned a lesson. New, fast cars are great, but I value low-stress in my life more. Now I only buy cars that are low stress. Thankfully my income has risen enough to make for some really nice cars! |
