Hi from Melbourne
Hi guys
Got a 1M two months ago, and am loving the car so far. I've been looking into putting and exhaust onto the car, but there seems to be so many different products on the market that its almost impossible to reach a decision. Also was looking into improving the air induction system. Any opinions? And finally was looking into ECU retunes. Once again so many options I cant decide. They all quote different power gains. Any opinions on this? Any reliability issues that members on this forum have experienced as a result of a retune? Cheers Sam |

Firstly congratulations! You won't stop loving the car, it just keeps giving smiles.
Regarding your planned mods, have you done a search of the forum? There is a lot of info but if you follow the search links you should narrow down your searching. Exhaust is a hard one. Lots of good options. What you choose will depend on price, goals. You Tube clips or in real life is the best way to decide. I'm also in Melbourne, so if you ever want to listen to mine just PM me. Intakes cause too much debate for and against, so I'm staying out of that one. More for 'sucking' sounds imo. ECU tunes will almost certainly reduce reliability. How much depends on how far the tune is willing to push the limits of the engine. Most stage 1 tunes produce similar power gains and are reasonably conservative (check Cobb, DMS, PP-Performance, Evolve, Giac and others for tunes or JB-4 for piggy backs). Higher stage tunes require supporting mods like charge pipe and bigger fmic, not to mention a more heavy duty clutch if pushing 600nm+! Good luck and welcome! |

Congratulations and welcome!
Mine is pretty much stock at the moment but I am going to do Mids first. Search this forum for Midpipes and you'll get a lot of info. Basically comes down to sound preference as they will all provide relatively the same performance benefit. For the most part your choices are MadDad, Berk, or the BMW N55. General consensus is this is the best bang-for-your-buck performance mod. Along with dyno proven gains, people also note better throttle response and decreased turbo lag. Our cars have secondary cats in the stock midpipes (these are after any oxygen sensors, so you won't get any ECU error problems removing them). The N55 (and other aftermarket options) remove the cats and will have various resonators in different sizes/locations to provide different sounds. In general I feel that the car is too quiet...and as a portion of the driver's emotional response, in my opinion, comes from the sound...I want more! I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the MadDad...I like the burble on overrun! Also, I think this setup is using stock axleback: If you're going to go with a full system, don't spend too much time researching the mids as they will be replaced anyway. Other things to research and possibly do are CDV (clutch delay valve) delete which is removal of a restriction in the clutches hydraulic line which was put in place by BMW to create a more even clutch engagement (to prevent people 'dropping' the clutch) unfortunately however it makes for some rough 1-2 shifting and a "disconnected feel". Also, consider some sort of Oil Catch Can which *might* reduce some of the carbon collection on the intake/valves area as our direct injection N54 motors are known to have. All of these are just suggestions, but I'm planning on taking care of these three items this spring. Again, congratulations! Gotta love the Alpine White! Cheers, Dave

Thanks for the help guys.
That MadDad midpipe sounds pretty good, but I really want to hear these things in person rather than youtube. Based on youtube I also liked the Remus race with n55 midpipe. Piets94, I will be in touch Cheers Sam |

I have tried quite a few different exhausts over the past 3 years. Started with a Eiesenman Race exhaust, coupled with the N55 mids, wasn't really much louder than stock, but still sounded great. Then went with Meisterschaft, also with the N55s... Absolutely awesome, and very exotic exhaust note. My number 1 Favourite. Unfortunately, my car became a daily after 3 years ownership, and although I loved the Meisterschaft, had to remove as it was just tooooo loud.. Settled on the Remus axle back, with the N55s... Great exhaust sound and zero drone. The rest of the mods are optional after exhaust IMO.. I have AFE CAI.. Cobb tune.. ETS Intercooler.. BM oil catch can..etc, as per sig. Research and enjoy mate. |

Nice one Ice, I've seen this car on Carsales, have this strange tendency to monitor the second hand 1M market every night I can, call it an illness.
Everyone will have different opinions on mods, some will say none, I'm in that camp, but have to say the HMS makes a quality sound. There are some you tube clips but it's wonderful to the naked ear. Which area are you in? You'll love this little angry man, it's so nice to just pootle around in, then when you want it to, it just turns savage. You'll have a ball. Congrats |

Nice car!!
Get a Jb4 or Cobb ( both very reliable and proven tunes) JB4 puts more power but Cobb has a smoother power delivery GThaus, Remus and Magnaflow have proven to be best sellers for us in terms of 1M exhausts

Love the pics. Especially the white against the blue backdrop
Tell me it's gotta be tough trying to open it up on the highway or an open stretch of road knowing there are speed cameras, traps, unmarked cop cars, and all that advertising that they're gonna catch you. I found it a truly oppressive police state especially with those billboards on the side of the highways (at least in NSW). But do enjoy it and it will never cease to put a smile on your face Welcome! |

Congrats!! Like what was said above, you will not stop loving this car. Your M looks great in white!
My suggestions: (take w a grain of salt) OEM N55 mids COBB Accessport w/ a pro-tune FMIC that does not involve cutting DPs are great as the OEM ones are really not that "free flowing" I like AR Design for carted and non. Aka Is good as they use factory mounting locations, however, cost is double...and there DPs are not titanium like there epic exhausts. Regarding exhaust, something quality built in a country known for it...I have a bolt on Dinan and love it. OCC to help keep the valves clean Drop in filter or dual cone...CAI won't work as our cars have secondary radiators. Maybe suspension after you get used to the OEM. I love my Öhlins R&T. Dampening is much improved. CDV delete and a SSK are great add ons too GL and enjoy

I like the sound of the stock exhaust too, but the HMS makes it now sound like the n54 bmw performance exhaust on steroids, and at the flick of a button, back to stock and refined. It's like emma and katy in the same garage. Iceman, catch up on a weekend sometime? Can sort something out with Smiley |
