Those who have taken delivery, what are people saying?
Have you received any looks or comments from other people on the car? I'm betting a majority of the public doesn't even know this car exists yet. What have their reactions been?
Just curious. |

I have talked to a few people about it already. One 350z owner and one truck owner thinking of switching to a car. One of them had some knowledge on it the other did not. I think those who like cars will know about it and others who don't pay attention won't.

I haven't taken delivery yet but I've been talking about it since I've ordered it and I'm surprised at the number of people who haven't even heard it exists, even among people who I wouldn't necessarily call enthusiasts, but at least people who are car fans.

I got a few "What is that?", and a few "I want that car!" comments.
I drove into Boston today, and noticed a few people looking and one TL driver that followed me most of the way to my work on the highway, making sure he got a look from all sides. I think it flies under the radar of most people though. Only people "in the know" realize the evil that lurks under the hood. |

One of the ultimate sleeper cars on the road right now IMO! It wasn't designed to look especially fast or to look like it wants to eat your babies... and that's what I love about it.

Parked to go get breakfast, and two guys trapped me for 15 minutes talking about the car.
Also, some people behind me at a red light were pointing and pointing and obviously talking about the car. People do check it out on the freeway. Everyone at work loves it. Family and friends love it. Most say it's really "cool" or "nice car", but some folks have used the word "cute", which to me is a curse word, but I guess I had better get used to it... LOL!

I absolutly loved the guy in a beautiful Black E46 that pulled up behind me at a light and I could see his lips going 1..3..5...? Then he got a real puzzled look on his face. Needless to say when the light went green I was gone and he fell way behind... (not that he was really trying to keep up)

Perhaps surprisingly....no, very few folks seemed to take much notice, at least not on the 100 mile drive home from the dealer.
Let's face it, this car isn't enough of a looker to grab the attention of non-enthusiasts. They see the Roundel, and although they obviously recognize that it's a Bimmer, they're ignorant about the notion of a new 1-Series. I suspect an auto enthusiast or BMW afficionado will perk up, but I haven't run into any of them yet. |

I'm the same as nova'. I don't even get looks from people driving 3's...I think that is pretty telling about 3 series drivers.
I was taking a friend for a ride on a backroad earlier today and I pulled out on a road in front of Z4. Needless to say he had to catch up to me pretty quick to find out what he was looking at. It is kind of funny to watch people not even notice to a brand new car, much less a Bimmer. It reminds me of Jeremy Clarkson's disdain for America's "Garden party for rich ape's" qoute off the good, the bad and the ugly. |

Friends and family love it. But I've gotten surprisingly little reaction out in public. Most people probably just see a BMW. I see the occasional head turn, but it's nothing compared to when the RX-8 was new. That car attracted all kinds of attention, crazy behavior (people sticking their heads out of moving cars to get a better look, for example), and endless questions.
At least so far, the reaction reminds me more of my '99 Cobra - it catches the eye of the occasional enthusiast, you might get a question or two, and sometimes you'll see a car guy looking under your car in the parking lot while talking excitedly to his obviously bored and embarrassed wife (the 99 Cobra was the first Mustang with an independent rear suspension). The sleeper factor is a good thing, IMO. |

My girlfriend's doorman asked "Is that the 1?" and I got an impressed look from a 911. Especially when he was looking at my rear ;-) But overall, not much.
Contrast that to my test of a new M3 -- the entire highway tried to race me. |

So People think it is a bad ass little car. I think BMW is doing a great job with its advertising campaign on the One series. Most people have no clue what the One series is so I believe the TV ads will help make this car known. VW did a great job with marketing the MKV GTI. Before the MKVs came out people just didn't give two craps about the old GTI. A few people have said to me that this is the car for me. They remember my Deep Blue Pearl 04 VW R32 and how cool that car was! My A4 was boring. Anyway I'm sure I will get a lot of looks. I already had some tool in his STI start with me. Gotta follow break in!
