So You Hate Run Flats and no Dipstick
We have complained alot about run flats and no dipstick. A friend traded in his 2006 330i for a 2009 A4. He felt great about getting a car without runflats and a dipstick.
Well, he did get a car without run flats, but when he tried to adjust tire pressure to his liking, his TPM keeps telling him his tires have low pressure. The pressures he tried to use are listed in the owners manual, but the dealer said they are not approved. The best part is the dipstick. He went to check the oil and found a cap where the dipstick was suppose to be. When he asked the dealer where the dipstick was, he was told it was a $500 add on. At least BMW tells us what we are getting. |

Everything Audi is super expensive these days... so much so that they now make BMW options packages seem like the better bargain - especially considering you have to get the S and RS versions to get close BMW driving dynamics.

Yup, Audi is more expensive than BMW. I was considering an A3 up until I priced it against the 135. Too damn expensive and nowhere near as much fun. $500 for a dipstick though???

Yes I hate the run-flats, they're gone once they're done.
Yes I hate no dip stick- I can't even verify if they actually perform the $130 oil change! Yes, Audis are way overpriced these days. I think the new S4 seems to be pretty well priced therefore will be the "bargain" of the fleet by a sizable margin. |

I just switched from a 2002 A4 to the 135i about 2.5 months ago. I would seriously consider another Audi again...I don't think BMWs in general are better than Audis or vice versa, it depends on what models you're looking at, and what you value in a car.
Just before I sold the A4, I found out that the Audi dealer broke the plastic handle on the dipstick in my car when I took it in earlier for an inspection. Rather than argue with the dealer about it, I just got a new one from the parts counter...it cost me about $18. Maybe Audi's using some special titanium/carbon ceramic/diamond-edged dipsticks nowadays?

I like German cars, so darn right I'll be looking at Audi in the next 3 yrs. My 325i and 135i are sweet rides, and so was my 2006 A4. Other than the top line A4 costing nearly as much as a 335i and offering lowering performance, Audi makes an excellent automobile. Now with the B8 S4, Audi finally got smart. They got ride of the V6 A4 variant, and replaced it with the S4, which used to cost a lot more than the V6 A4. But, Audi wised up and lowered the price of the S4 closer to the 335i. So now you still have 2 A4's to choose from in the US, a 2.0T A4 that runs easily with a 328i and a new supercharged V6 that runs easily with a 335i. Last edited by RPM90; 08-23-2009 at 12:12 AM.. |

Audi actually includes a large color screen interface for all types of controls, unlike BMW which charges and only gives it to you if you order the whole Nav setup. So, here, BMW loses to Audi. From what A4 owners have said, there is still a hole for the dipstick, and it appears that the old B7 dipstick will work. It's about $18 or so dollars. That could have changed, but I haven't heard of a $500 add on. This sounds like some anti Audi BS. Even so, the electronic gauge is what some of these German brands are going with. In my 135i I don't have a gauge of any kind for oil other than a light. And, we don't have a standard modern color screen interface. We still have a cheap radio that could be from a 1999 3 series. |

I've also read that a previous gen A4's dipstick also works so I call BS on the $500 option.
