Slight transmission whine at low rpm - normal?
I picked up my 6-speed 128i yesterday, and there's just a couple of things I noticed that's got me wondering if they're 'normal'.
There is a slight whining sound, most noticeable in 2nd gear from 1500 rpm up to about 3000 rpm. It does this in 1st through 4th but it's most noticeable in 2nd. It's not coming from the stereo, it's coming from the drivetrain. If anyone could please let me know if their car does this, and/or if it went away with more miles I would really appreciate it. |

Well... I don't think that (kind of sound) is normal. Maybe it will go away in time (ie after many miles later (5K to 10K). But that is why we have a warranty.
Does it go away when you shift the car into neutral - while driving at speed? Or only when your in those gears? Sounds like the rear end to me. Most of the time this is caused by going too fast too soon. I have noticed that on a few rental cars over here in DE. People don't care and V-max the car right away. This is why I think BMW says to not exceed 100 mph in the first 1,200 miles. |

i noticed the same thing in my 08 125i when it was brand new. nothing bad has happened yet (touch wood). not sure if i've gotten use to it or if it has gone away, will take note next time i take it for a drive. But i suspect its probably nothing to worry about.

I have a 11 128 and I was thinking about also posting the same question. I also had a 328 w/ auto but don't remember it doing that.
Hope it goes away in time. I have 2800 miles on my car. |

There's a bit of a whine in mine too, you get used to it and will hardly notice it after a while. Or just buy an intake and make your engine louder
