Baby Seat....will it fit?

I have searched for this answer, but I haven't found my specific question addressed in the past.

I am about ready to put in my order, but I have to consider the above prior to as my wife and I are starting to think about starting a family. Do rear facing baby seats fit in the 1 series? Given that this is only 2 door, if the seat fits, how hard would it be to place the child in the seat (I assume you would have to do so from the other side of the vehicle)?

Lastly, if a rear facing seat doesn't fit well in the 1, would it fit in the 3 coupe? This vehicle would not be the main source of transportation with the baby (a Prius would), but it would need to work. I am also looking to stay away from 4 doors if I could.

Thanks in Advance!

Can't see why it wouldn't fit. The seat cushions are not particularly small and there is enough space between the two to provide for two baby seats.

I had a Jetta VR6 when my first was born and the only issue we had was fitting the rear-facing infant seat. It fit, but just. Don't imagine the rear seat in the 1er is too much smaller than the previous gen Jetta.

Oh, and a word from the wise. Get the seat protectors for your child seat. Otherwise the seat will leave semi-permanent indentations in the upholstery.

If the back seat is similar to that of the E46 coupe then I suspect it will be a tight fit. From personal experience my son's seat did not fit so well in the E46.

We are currently awaiting a call from the dealer as soon as their first cars arrive. We want to check out the car before ordering and one thing we are looking for is the fitting of a child seat. I don't think it should be a problem. If I can get a child seat in the rear of my MINI Cooper then I would think the 1 series would be a little better.

BTW, I use the Recaro Young Sport which is not a bulky child seat.

Is there a "BMW Baby Seat"?

Also, would there be any issue getting the baby seat past the front seat, given that the seats electronically slide forward to gain access to the rear seats?

I'm doubtful that it will fit with a passneger in the front seat. I used to have a MINI Cooper S and and we used our rear facing baby seat in it ONCE...for the trip to the dealer for a trade it appraisal
towards my 328i. My wife had to sit with seat all the way forward and the seatback upright - not comfortable at all! With a front passenger, the rear facing baby seat only fits in my 328i in the middle seat, so I don't see it working any better in a 1 series.

It should go without saying that getting baby seats in and out of any coupe is more difficult than a four door (or a minivan). It's part of the compromise you consciously make when buying a coupe.

I have a 2 year old and he sits in a Recaro Young Sport as well. If this seat fits flawlessly in the back of the R32, I am not worried about it fitting into the back of the slightly larger 135. A rear facing seat will be tighter. Our Peg Perego rear facing seat fit in the back of the R, but then again im not tall so my seat isn't that far back to begin with.

I know they have the BMW Junior Seat I - II for the
BMW 1 Series Convertible (see page 12 of 12 in URL below).
I assume they also have a comparable baby seat for the Coupe..

I have two of these Jané Indy seats in the rear of my E87 130i. They are for children 15-36kg.

They clip into the ISOFIX latches.

Plenty of room.

That's for kids 9-12 kg (20-26lbs) though. A rear facing seat for infants will need much more space.

The best thing I think you could do is get / borrow a rear facing childseat and give it a try. The thing to be aware of is how long a kid is in the rear facing position and just how big the seat is. I have a 14 month old and he was in a smaller rear facing child seat until he was about 20-22lbs (this type of seat had a base we cliped his child carrier into - it also clipped into the stroller so no removing him from the car seat to keep him with us). We then switched him to a seat that could be both rear or forward facing (keeps you from buying an additional carseat). It's a bit bigger and it interfered just a little with Mommies Focus 4dr (I'm 5'9" and can't put the seat back as far as I want - I like it back further than most my size - however it's not uncomfortable). Also remember they will only be rear facing in the larger car seat for 3-5 months (that's a WAG) depending on their individual growth rate and size. This type of seat stays in the car. Once beyond the rear facing seat you have to factor in getting them out while sleeping (never wake a sleeping baby). That requires either using the Prius or being aware of his sleep schedule (personal opine anyway). Good luck!

Any new owners here that have tried a rear-facing infant seat yet?

I don't thnk you will have much of a problem. I can fit two seats in the back of my RX8 which has and actual tunnel/console betwen them. I had my daughter's seat rear facing when I bought it. Passenger seat room was cramped but it fit better rear facing than forward facing.

I can almost guarantee you can find a seat that works. Just don't go for a really wide ones. Keep in mind even the wide ones have a smaller base they sit on so they can be reclined when the infant doesn't have head control yet. Boosters for when a child is 3+ are the ones you need to check for width more IMO. They sit right on the seat so the width of the actual booster has to fit flat on the seat cushion.

Just go measure a few seats and take your tape when you go to a dealer. Problem solved.
