5.0 Coyote
Driving through "Mexico" the other day I encounter a new 5.0 Mustang on an "abandon air field." There was a mutual need to test out the abilities of our cars against each other. Down low around 40 to 60 our car were fairly matched. In some cases I pulled on the 5.0, but only up to about 100-110. After that, those 5.0's scream! He would pull or gain on me hard after 100. We never got a real race in from a set roll and three honks, but I'm pretty sure I would have lost if we had raced from any significant speed to past 100.
What have your experiences with the new 5.0 been? |

There were 2 new 5.0's at the drag strip last year when I ran my 135 (stock with PPK) there. My best run was 13.2@ 104 MPH, and had 2 runs at 13.4. Both of the 5.0's were between 14.2-14.5. Of course, I had no way to find out about comparing at over 100 MPH. I was surprised they were slower in the 1/4. I have rented 5.0's a couple of times, and they sure feel fast and sound great.

The new 5.0 motors are great motors. I think the biggest hit to the car is the weight. All of the new muscle cars are heavy - though, I think the mustang is the lightest and the challenger is by far the pig of the group.

I pull my buddies 12 stick even up top on the street. I ran a 12.9@ 110 this past Friday he ran a 13.2@109. Stock except for mufflers. New boss there also ran 13.2@110.5. He also has mufflers. Him and I were the exact same 1/8 mph also.

Up here in Calgary, 5.0 Automatic Convertibles are slower and manual 5.0L Convertibles are dead even, where manual coupes are faster I find.

Mine was brembo packaged base (cloth/plastic) model. And it could really move. My biggest issue was with handling and build quality. By the way, AT are pulling every 6MT at the strip here. Except for a Shelby500 doing 11's hehe |

5.0s can run 12.8s @ ~108 with a good driver. When they were first out back on the streets I encountered one at the drag strip running consistent 12.8s bone stock like you find at the dealer. Boss 302s can run low 12s bone stock as well.
They are fast cars but I would assume so with 420+ HP and weighing #36xx. Sam, do you have any mods done to your car? I haven't ran a new 5.0 but did do a run with a older 4.6 which was bad for him....even with him getting the jump and my car being stock. |

They’re fast for sure. Did a 60-130 pull a few months back against one, probably ended up a car length or two in front. Strong motor for sure though.

Well anything can happen on the streets and so does having the driver mod, as we all know that. It's always fun to get a good run in with worthy cars. I hope I can run one before I get a tune but that's unlikely.

Yes, that is what they CAN run. My friends even have seen them run that fast. Anywhere from 12.8-13.0. Just like our cars are suppose to run around 13.3 but how many of us has done that bone stock? Me? I've ran a best of 13.5 once but ran consistent 13.7-13.8 and I had 225/255 non-runflat all-season tires, which are a hell of a lot better than the stock run craps.
The one I seen still had paper tags on the rear window, I even looked at his tires and it was the stock pirelli's or whatever they came with for the 2011 model. The fastest bone stock 5.0 has run in the low 12s but that guy was launching VERY high and eventually broke his car doing it so much. Generally you'll see them in the 13s, like low to mid 13s since people are not like the next person at figuring out how to launch the car. Another factor is also the gear ratio. The manuals have 3 different options and I think the auto has 2....maybe 3 as well but I don't know. 3.31, 3.5x and 3.73, either way the driver mod helps out a LOT for any car. |

I would have bought either a 5.0 or Boss 302 but didn't. The dealer I went to for the 5.0 was a douche and didn't like the payment I wanted to pay.....because he didn't know how much I was going to put down. He kept saying "You know thats a $35k car right? The minimal payment is $600 per month." Smurfer wouldn't even let me test drive and finally "gave" in to me just sitting in the car and taking a look at it, inside and out. Needless to say I left and laugh on the way out. And all the Boss 302's were being marked up and I'm not playing that stupid game.
I went for the 135i after the Mustang didn't work out, the Camaro was a total nightmare of a car just to sit in (stupid plastic crap above the door armrest that goes across the dash to the other door, plus a bunch of other stuff) and the G8 GXP deal didn't work out for me. I test drove a DCT 135i then the wife and I went in and worked a deal on my current 135i. I love this little car minus the Nav...... Ford should have released the 5.0 when the new Camaro came out but better late than never. |

03/04 Cobras sound beastly and the 5.0s do too with a full exhaust system.
By the way, there were no US 2002 Cobras. There was something like 100 made and they are all in Aussie land. But I got ya, a 99-01 Cobra sounds good too but not as good as the 2 I mentioned above. I REALLY love the sound of a ZR1, that LS9 really screams even with the stock exhaust...especially when shifting near redline. |
