"break-in period" irrelevant?

Friend test drove an Audi S3 today, and claims the engine reaches red line (6500rpm) with each automatic gear shift. That means you are reaching red line the first mile you put on the car. Does this mean break-in miles (1250 miles for the 135i) have become a thing of the past?

What are you talking about? Are you saying the S3 won't trigger an upshift at anything under than red line? No matter how light you are on the throttle?

According to the manual S3 break-in is 500 miles, but you will have people who say cars are meant to be driven and others who swear by waiting...

On youtube--search 2015 audi s3 test drive by Gregory Berdette it shows needle going up to near the red line as you hear the gears shift and he says that is what happens. In other words, it looks like it won't shift to the next gear until it reaches about 6000rpm

If that's the case, driving around town in first gear must be a drag.

that's probably only in "S" mode. The "S" mode on Audi dual clutch gearboxes is completely idiotic....basically just shifts at high RPMs. The only way to drive an Audi dual clutch gearbox is in full manual mode where you control the shifts.....

No, it's not irrelevant, it's good practice, and just because Audi does something stupid, why would you think that applies to BMW or any other make?

Well half of the people drive a new car hard right from the start but others wait 500, 1000 or 1,500 miles before going anything past half throttle.

Truth is, the rings and everything in the engine needs to "sit". What I've done is just drive my new vehicles easy and at different speeds for the first 100 or so miles then drive it how I normally would after. If a engine fails, it fails. No matter if you followed a break in procedure out not. Some engines are tested right before they go into a car, like a R8 engine for instance.

Do you need to go to the redline all the time from the start? No. There still is a break in period just like you don't need to wait to change your engine oil every 15k miles.....
