Backup copies of Nav DVD's.. Do they really work properly??
In order to protect myself from the theft of my Pro Sat Nav Disc... I made a backup.
Initially all seemed perfect with the backup - navigates fine, maps are OK etc.. But after a few weeks I noticed that some features did not work OK on the Backup BUT were fine when the original was inserted. Things that did not work:
The way I burn't the backup was by creating an ISO image and the burning from that using Roxio. It is funny how it was not immediately noticeable and that all major functions worked, just these smaller things not working. Has ths happened to anyone else? Dave |

I've had no problems using it at all. TMC, POIs & street names all work fine (street names don't all appear in perspective mode- is that what you're using??) I used Nero to backup the disc onto an 8x Sony DVD-R, using a lower 4x burn speed. I did have problems using higher burn speeds- every so often the Idrive would think the disc wasn't inserted & would ask for it). Which disc version do you have Dave? I reckon you just need to 'backup' the disc again with Nero & use a lower speed (x2 or x4). BTW- first UK meet at Donington Park, Sat April 22nd at 12pm Viv |

Thanks Viv,
Some great points... Regarding the street names in perspective... I forgot about that and I will re-check. The disc I have is 2006-1. The burn speed was low... about 2x this is all the disc would allow. It is a dvd +. I might try a DVD - tomorrow. The strange thing is that everything else works perfectly... Full nav, etc.. No glitches or anything, But absoluely no TMC. Dave |

Did you say you used a DVD+R disk?
IF you DID, that could be your problem. Most DVD drives expect DVD-R disks, not +R. So, try using the -R. That may solve your problem. Larry in Los Angeles |

I used a backup Nav DVD in Europe for my ED trip, and I've used a backup DVD for almost the whole time after I received my car back in the States. For the first two weeks, I just used my original 2005-2 Nav DVD, but then I decided to make a backup and use that and keep my original in a safe place.
I have had no problems with DVD backup copies. |

Latest update...
I have tried DVD+ AND also DVD- both at slow speed. Still no TMC. As I have a 2006-1 Nav disc I am wondering if this newer version has better copy protection. Tomorrow I will try Nero instead of Roxio JIC. |

Just a thought... Could they be using both layers on the DVD?. My disk is in the car, which is at my dealer, so I can't check.
I've heard of other manufacturers using the second layer. |

Just stick the disc into your PC Dave & have a look at the capacity of the disc in the drive. Nero Infotool will also tell you what type of disc it is & its capacity. I've got to say that I doubt it is a DL disc holding more than 4.7Gb of data, but there's no harm checking. The 2005-2 disc is a normal single layer. |

I have all of the files from the DVD on my HDD, and they're only 3.29GB. But the info that I have been told about the other manufactuers DVD suggests that it similarly has a small amount of data, but the second layer is important.

Hmm...
I checked with Roxio's disc information and it didn't say it was dual layer... but then I couldn't see where it would say it was dual layer. I also compared both the original and copied discs for content and they were identical in everyway including the TMC directory. Starting to think it is copy protected... Hope to get chance to load nero soon.. |

I tried using a really good Philips DVD-R at 1x speed, because people said that was the best way to make a copy. Although Titanium Toast verified the disc, it had random error messages.
So, just for the he** of it, I did a 4X copy on a cheap Staples DVD-R and it works PERFECTLY. Not one error and it's been in the car for the last two weeks or so. I haven't made a 4x copy with the Philips disc, but what it may be is that the car is confused by the dark purple dye on the Philips brand DVD and likes the lighter dye on the Staples DVD. That's all I can think of. In any case, ususally DVD drives like DVD-R and not +R because -R is compatible with more drives. Good luck. L |

I can understand making a backup for peace of mind, but why use the backup instead of the original? If the original stops working despite your using it as intended, couldn't you get it replaced by BMW under warranty? It's not like it's a "wear and tear" item. I would think that as long as you send them the old disk, they'd have to send a replacement. The backup could then be used while you are waiting for BMW to send you the replacement DVD.
Where is the flaw in that logic?

I have a different view:
1. I keep originals in a safe place and use copies. Heat in cars can damage discs. (In Palm Springs, it can be 120 in August and inside the car, it probably is 180 degrees. Not good for plastic.) Besides, my DVD copy cost me 50 cents. 2. If you just read the many threads on here about the Nav Discs and generally about getting things from dealers, you will see that your just saying if the disc fails get a new one from the dealer under warranty doesn't fly. The dealers DON'T have extra discs lying around and, good luck getting the latest one. My dealer only has 2005 discs and I got the 2006-2 with my new car because the disc came from the VDC -- not the dealer. So, that's my view. Tell you what, you use your original disc and, if it stops working, keep us posted as to how long it takes you to get a new one. I'd be interested in that test of how good BMW is at replacing Nav discs. But, I value your opinion. I just don't agree. |

You nearly have me convinced. Maybe I’ll use the backups in the car instead, and save the originals.
But do the disks fail that often? I have read lots of threads here for probably close to a year, and I don’t recall seeing threads about a nav disk failure from heat or otherwise. If not, then unless I can make a copy that works just as well as the original (as you seem to have been able to do), then I plan to use the originals in the car. Others seem to have one problem or another using backups. [edit to add] This is all still about a month away for me, so by the time my car arrives I may have firmly decided to use the backup DVDs instead. But for now, I’m leaning toward using the originals in the car.

What can I tell you?
I'm an anal guy. If I continued to get errors on the copy, I'd switch to the original disc. But, at this point, the copy works. I haven't really heard of any problems of damaged discs. But, more importantly, I HAVE heard that some people have had their discs stolen from the car -- obviously, by someone who knows how to use them. That's sufficient cause to use the copy. L |

OT, but IMO they should have the map information stored on a CF card, or on flash memory internally. Fewer moving parts, a 4GB card doesn't cost all that much, takes up less space, and is not affected by bumps. I'm not sure why we don't see car companies do this.
