Where does this hole lead to?

I was doing something on my 1er and saw a bunch of leaves in the back corner and started pulling them out then saw this grate (or rather the one on the other side). When I got to the side where this picture is taken, the grate was sideways in the hole. In the process of pulling out the leaves and putting that back to normal, a bunch of sticks and leaves fell down the hole. Where does it go? Is it bad there's some leaves down there now?

It goes straight down your inner fender and out the bottom. Just run some water thru there to flush out any leaves and junk.

This was one of the first questions I wanted to ask when I first bought my 1er! It too was full of leaves and sticks and when I pulled them out I saw the grate was actually completely loose and doesn't seem to attach or connect to anything, just kind of sits in the opening. So its normal for the grate be just sitting like that? Also glad to find out the opening is just a drain hole

The grate or junk catcher does just sit in there. It does a pretty good job. I had to remove that when I was replacing my hood release cable so I saw that it does just lead down and out.
