I wonder how many of us here drive with our car doors locked or how many habitually lock their doors as soon as they get in the car. I was taught to do this in my kiddy days. I think it's a good practice and basic personal security.

What would be a $250000 BMW? A 7 series?

I think all BMW will have a function to lock their door when driving....

Not all BMW's have auto lock on drive off. MY 2005 X5 doesn't. In current models that have it, auto lock is an option that has to activated.

I always did it in my Subaru after I got attempted car jacked.

Whenever I go to Christine now, especially in car parks or on the street, I always look around if anyone's around me. Otherwise, as soon as i'm in my car I lock it - i don't bother with the auto-lock after driving off.

there is an option where the car auto locks the door for you when your car becomes in motion. I learned that from my sister.

But it only goes in effect at 20km/h+ (or from what i've seen).

who's going to carjack you once you're over 20km/h? Sure it's good for when you get to lights, but I always lock as soon as i'm in the car.

You sure about this? Did the dealer tell you this?

Since the E46 series came out it has been a function that can be programmed in at the dealer. My 2003 E46 has it so I'm puzzled as to why a 2005 X5 wouldn't. It is pretty much standard since 1999/2000.

All of my cars are programmed to lock as I drive off. I lived in london for too many years and have seen too much sh!t and am therefore too paranoid about these things.

My brother in law had his 318Ti compact stolen, 3 thugs dragged him out of his car and beat him up then drove off. Can't be too careful nowadys I think.

It was an M5 - cars cost more than double in Australia. I don't know how they can afford them down there. Perhaps that's why there are so many car jackings.

I wouldn't go so far as to say we have a lot of car jackings here in Oz. Certainly a heck of a lot less per capita than somewhere like South Africa.
