BMW officially announced that a new 1M (M2) is on the way

Quote:
After sitting down with BMW M’s CEO, Dr. Friedrich Nitschke for an interview, BMWBlog reports that BMW will be producing a successor to the greatly loved BMW 1-Series M-Coupe.

“We stopped the production of the 1 Series M Coupe in the middle of last year and we launched in Germany the M135i. It’s a new category for us, the M Performance,” Dr. Nitschke told BMWBlog. “At the moment we are thinking of what can we do with an entry-level car for the M brand. We haven’t made a decision yet, but the 1 M coupe was so successful, that in my opinion, I am absolutely sure we will build a successor.”
Hooah!

This news was recently reported in another thread.

It's almost certainly the M2 they were already developing in 2010 (4 cylinder).

I think it's a given that an M2 will be built to replace the wildly popular 1M. Thanks again to Dr Kay Siegler for giving the world a new Smaller M Car. It may take until 2016 for the car to get here but it will come. 4 or 6 cylinder, still too early to say?

Our 1M's however will go down in the BMW History Books as low production Test Mule vehicles that paved the way for a new segment of smaller, lighter M cars. Our cars are 1 of 740, (739 total officially licensed) total cars to the USA whereas the M2 will sell thousands of examples. The M2's will surly be great cars, but they won't be 1M's.

I'm probably going to add the M2 to my comparison chart in 4-6 years (along with F80 M3 and Cayman S).

The only thing I worry about is looks. The standard F20 just doesn't do it for me. Even the M135i only looks ok from certain angles. I hope there will be an LCI that fixes the weird front end.

That said, I was not a huge fan of the standard E82 either.

This. Looks and weight will be razor's edge between a wildly successful car and an also-ran.

People keep getting excited about a cheaper, smaller m car that performs as well as the m3. Few seemingly account for the crappy looks of this new 1 series and even the old 1m which many would agree was not a looker. you pay money for more than performance figures. Those who can afford it pay for an m3 because it looks beautiful, classic designs and are a step above any of these 1m/m2 future models.

Sure its great to have an intro m but the people buying the m3 are usually not concerned with saving 15k and care more about having performance plus a beautiful car

Guys, this particular guy has started a thread a while ago in F80 M3 section where he whines and screams about the horrible discovery he made recently: ..that the future M3/M4 won't have a sliding armrest and that's like the end of the world for him etc. You have to go check it to believe it:

http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=810829

Thankfully replies from M3 community show us that there still is some hope left!

This also means that think twice before replying these kind of posters if you have a life/work/family and else

Thanks for shedding your light over this matter. Thousands of posts over here at 1addicts, but yours is amongst the best ones.

Man, you blew us all out of our shoes with your wisdom. What an eye-opener ! We, rookies at the 1M forum, definitely do not stand any chance against a mighty connoisseur like you. With your precious know how, you easily manage to talk ice into ashes. Swatting flies at the blink of an eye. We are actually humbled and honored by your visit at the 1M section. "Success" must be your middle name. So first and foremost, allow me to thank you on behalf of all 1M forum fellows, for your inspiring insights, which you even share free of charge.

You gracefully nailed it with exquisite decorum when you suggested that the 1M is nothing more than merely "The Poor Man's M3". So true. Actually, as you correctly suggested, we are craving for the ///M badge, but, unfortunately "il n'y a que la vérité qui blesse" (only the truth hurts): we simply cannot afford an M3 - indeed the 15K extra is a painful budget overshoot - it would derail us finance-wise. The M3 is indeed the ultimate car we want, infinities of dreams imploding into one. If only you knew how we are yearning for the glow of a high octane affair with an M3 ...but it's out of reach. We got to settle for a poor consolation prize: the significantly inferior 1M ("crappy looks" as you righteously described). Luckily BMW gave us the impression that we belong to the ///M crowd, but, of course, that's just a marketing trick they pulled: we all know that the 1M is no true ///M car - no, it's a ///Mockup car.

But that's life. Some guys have all the luck. We got to know our place in the universe of life. You always go for gold, while we got to be happy with iron or wood. During school days you, the Alpha Male, went home with the prom queen, while we, the Omega Losers, went home alone.

Please do us all a favor and let us know when you apply for the the position of BMW M GmbH CEO, so that we can timely create a Facebook fansite in support of your application.

Conclusion: hats off, Your ///M Highness M3takesNYC - your latest post is truly a CLASS ACT.

Gtfo

It's not enough for you to troll the m3 forums with your epic m3 fanboy bias?

I'm sure the view is nice from your ivory tower where you don't care about 15000 dollars. Way to bring that up despite the fact that it has zero relevance to the topic at hand.

Enjoy your baller status m3, we are all very impressed

You make us laugh, a lot. First off the performance of your M3 is NO more than that of a 1M. Second the 1M was created because your M3 has grown to a size larger than the even the E39 M5 from Two Gens ago, which by the way was still a better car than the current PIG of a bloat M3. People aren't near as concerned about saving money for the Smaller 1M, M2 as they are being able to still get a car from BMW that is smaller than a Barge.

If you want something Pretty get a Corvette

Did drive E92 M3 for three years, turned it in for 1M.......

There`s no match what so ever concerning driving fun, 1M will beat the M3 all the way.

I`m anxious about the M2, and how it compares to the 1M.

As I do think about the next step, what is a suitable follow up for the 1M, for me there are 2 options;

-M2
-Cayman S (R?)

Actually, "Duckling you're a swan" suits the 1M very well ...and the M2 hopefully too.

And so we're on topic again.

The only thing I worry about is looks. The standard F20 just doesn't do it for me. Even the M135i only looks ok from certain angles. I hope there will be an LCI that fixes the weird front end.
The Feb. Roundel article says "look for aggressive restyling, strongly differentiated from the M135i." I like the sounds of that.

But I don't like the sound of "double the volume of the 1M", but I suppose it would be multiple production years and possibly a bigger US allocation. (Roundel said 6300 1Ms worldwide?).

With no real details about the M2 available, I've been surprised to see some folks already bad mouthing it here (artificial steering, artificial sounds, etc).
