So you run 11's in 1/4, what mods did you do?
As the title says...include slips if you have them and tire compound please...thanks! I took her to the 1/8th mile last night and she needs mods and traction in a big way. About to drop some money on the 1 and curious to see all the great ideas out there. Have $4k to burn, what to do, what to do?

It really depends on your transmission. 6MT is going to take a lot more skill and work to get in to the 11s, hell even low - mid 12s. LSD, sticky tires, and a LOT of seat time. For autos, you should probably be running good tires and FBO, but you might be able to get away with no LSD.

An idiot could put fat DRs or 10.5W ET streets on a 400hp car, dump the clutch and go 11s if you're at a reasonable altitude with good air density regardless of transmission.

So drag racing isn't skill with a manual? Ooooook. That means a 16 year old can go to the drag strip and run 11s with a 6 spd ZL1 that has monster DRs out the back first time down the track.
A manual trans requires SKILL to get the most out of it in a straight line. There is more than dumping the clutch and shifting gears. If you cant launch correctly then you're not going to make a good pass. |

I didn't say it wouldn't take any skill. If that's how it read, then I'm sorry. I meant it won't take "a lot more skill," which is what you said. Maybe a 16 year old kid can take the car down the strip and maybe he can't. On his first pass? I doubt it. But after 20 passes, probably. I've seen 12 year-olds in pushsters go 10s. I have over 1000 total passes down 1320's in 15 different states. Done these in manual cars, auto cars, NA, turbo, nitrous, blower, so I'm pretty familiar with what is required to go down a track and I'm pretty confident in my experience. I don't disagree that if you can't launch correctly then you won't have your best pass, but in this case we are talking about a car (a BMW 135 - not a ZL1) that like it or not is pretty easy to drive. Let's be honest, drag racing, especially in cars like ours, isn't the rocket science of racing. You might not have your best pass, but you can definitely have a *good* pass. So yes, there is more to it than dumping the clutch and shifting the gears, but not *much* more than that is required to get into the times the OP is talking about. If the OP is looking to one day have the fastest 6-speed 135 in the country, then I'll agree, he will probably need to figure some things out about feathering and pedaling and keeping it in a straight line.

Not every person can make the same times as the pros do. An auto is easy to launch but a manual takes time to learn and not just some idiot off putting big DRs on the back of his car then revving to 5k and dumping the clutch. A "driver mod" is what makes a manual vehicle run great.
Our cars aren't that great in the 1/4 mile simply because of the IRS. No one has yet to figure out the wheel hop in this car. But I bet if the axles were like the ZR1s....then the wheel hop wouldn't be much of an issue. |

I am really just curious of those that are running 11's at the track, what mods have you done, really...this is my first BMW, but I've raced just about all my cars from my Audi S4, EVO 8, GT2, GT3, Supra, NSX, S2K, 350Z, E63 AMG, C63 AMG, SLS AMG...etc....I'm just curious, that's all. All of my cars have been a 5pd or 6spd so feathering and launching isn't an issue.

Well I'm sure you're going to need full bolt-ons with a mix of E85 and pump gas. Most people tune 1st gear down a bit so you can get a better launch in this car then up the boost in 2nd gear on out.
Full bolt-ons for this car is pretty much as follows: full exhaust, intake, bigger intercooler, charge pipe (for N54s like you) and thats it. Then tune it for all that plus the E85/pump gas mix (30/70 mix) then its up to your skill in getting the car into the 11s for sure. Then also getting a set of 255 or 265 rear tires that are street legal drag radials and you're all set. |

My previous 6AT 335i...
Cobb E40 Protune VRSF DPs BMW DCI ETS 5' FMIC That car ran a 12.00 @ 119.6. The trap speed indicates it could have gone into the 11s easy as the power is there. If I was not running half worn Hankook V12s, it would have been an 11.8-11.9 easy. Manuals are notoriously harder but you should be concerned with the trap speed much more than the time, I feel many people miss this point.

My previous 2008 135i had the following:
Cobb OTS E30 map Helix FMIC Raceland downpipes Apex ARC-8 rims with stock runflats With these mods, I ran a 12.0@118mph with a horrible 2.071 60ft. Those runflats were half worn and made it very difficult to grip, but I am very certain with better tires such as Michelin PSS it would have gone 11's easily as it made the power (trap speeds). This of course was with an auto transmission. |

If you can dish out the $2-3k for an LSD, I think it would help a lot with the launch. I have:
'08 N54 135i coupe VRSF Downpipes BMS intake 30/70 e85 with JB4 map 5 Apex EC-7'1 with 265 Conti Extreme Contact DW Ran 12.797 At the launch the car hops like a rabbit because of the E"LSD," I don't remember exact 60' times but it felt like I lost the most time there. I'm thinking a front mount would help it breath better at top too. |

Grip, a settled back end, and a real diff.
Power is the easy part.

Getting 11s is all about grip. Yes you'll need power, but without a good 60ft it's impossible no matter how much power you have on this platform.
I recently got my best time of 12.1@122mph with new tyres (AD08Rs). Only had a 2.0 60ft which is good for me. Check out this thread if you want to see what it takes to get 11s. BMW 1 Series Australian Drag Racing Standings http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=534598

11.76 @ MIR
I posted a best time of 11.76 at MIR in Nov, 2012.
2009 135 Auto, Street tires (Toyo Rs) COBB with PTF tune by Jake (40% E85/93 mix) FBO with the exception of stock mids No weght reduction I completed 6 passes that day with times from 12.2, 12.1, 11,.9s and finally 11.76. This was only my 2nd time on the track so I improved my times pretty quickly. The previous year I ran a 12.9 with a Dinan tune and everything else stock (no bolt-ons). I just recently moved into a new home so my slips are somewhere in 1 of 80 or so boxes. This time was acomplished with a 1.94 60ft, so it was pretty impressive. However,DA that day was right around 0, so basically the conditions could not have been any better. Oct 2013 I bought Hoosier slicks, catless mids, coding for the transmission flash, and asked Jake to slightly increase boost down low since I would have a little more grip. I was also planning to do some weight reduction to try to get to the low 11s. Plan was spoiled as I had to beging looking for a home and uproot my family from Va to Md. Since then I haven't attended MIR. Plan to possibly attend this Nov. |
