DCT Launch Control and PPK
I'm making this thread to document my findings.
In another thread it was reported that the Performance Power Kit (PPK) deletes the Launch Control (LC) feature that comes with DCT. To me that report isn't reliable, as nobody could confirm it. In fact, someone else reported that LC still works after installing PPK. Since I will be installing PPK sometime next week, I wanted a 0-60 baseline so I can tell what improvements I will be getting. Although my car meets the break-in requirements for LC, I have not been able to activate it because my commute is too short and I never met the 10 Km warm up requirement. Today I went on an extensive drive to find a deserted road so I can LC the car. I found 3 candidate locations. None are ideal. None are completely deserted, so I didn't feel comfortable in repeating my experiments round trip, as I should, in order to average out inclination, wind speed, etc. So, I did one run in each location, and moved on to the next before anyone could say something. :eeps: As such, the numbers aren't so much valid indicators of 0-60 as much as baselines to indicate before PPK performance. With any luck, I shall repeat the experiment at the same locations, after PPK. Location 1: 0-60 --> 4.82 s Location 2: 0-60 --> 5.66 s (some lose gravel on road) Location 3: 0-60 --> 4.71 s Average = 5.06 s Times measured with an old G-Tech. |

You seem to be right in line with some good mag #'s.
Road & Track and Car & Driver got 4.7 and 4.8. Im especially curious as to your post PPK 0-60 times as I had the PPK Stg I installed on my '10 Steptronic today. Last edited by NYC6; 01-05-2012 at 07:09 PM.. |

Very cool, I will be watching this thread, excited to see what the times are after the ppk, I have the ppk installed. I haven't tried launch yet because its winter and the streets are bad now.
The owners manual explains how to activate launch control |

Very simple to use.
I'll sell it to you after I take my measurements post PPK. Make me an offer. Otherwise I'll just put it on ebay. I have used it once only with my previous BMW. Using it again with this one. I don't think I'll need it again... I like my cars stock, but this is perfect for people who like to do mods. |

I know you're doing this to check the launch control. But, if you have time it would also be interesting to see how the 40-70 times improve. Below are the instructions (if you don't have a G-Tech) from the RX-7 forum:
The method: You need a flat straight away preferably one that would allow you to run it both directions so you can average the times to account for wind. Start by maintaining a steady 35mph. Floor it! At 40 mph hit the timer...a stopwatch is fine. Keep it floored. Stop the timer at 70 mph. Repeat as neccasary...careful it gets addictivley fun. My understanding is the mid-range acceleration improves the most with this option. Last edited by mdputnam; 01-06-2012 at 02:49 PM.. |

My commute to work is less than 6.2 miles. LC won't activate.
I have been too busy and have no time to go on my little expedition. And I won't be satisfied with just about any stretch of road. It has to be the same 3 locations. I will tell you this... I distinctly recall that the D mode was too soft for my liking. The darn thing shifts to 7th gear at 40mph. Before the PPK, I found myself constantly using the S mode. After the PPK, I'm finding the D mode just barely adequate. I don't need to switch to S mode, even though I still do, just for fun. With any luck, will do the test this weekend. |

Thanks for putting up numbers but you know the PPK only claims an improvement of .1 0-60. The real "joy", as many have commented, is in the increased throttle response and better pull at highspeed speed, say from 60-???

Not to nit-pick but all the BMW lit says .2 0-60.
I just had Stage I done on my '10 and I'll bet its at least 2/10ths quicker, SOTP anyway. We know how conservative the Company usually is in regard to performance #'s. I'm curious to see what he nails it in. Last edited by NYC6; 01-12-2012 at 04:11 PM.. |

Given the times we're dealing with (0.1 sec) it would be lost in the measurement noise of anything manually activated. I also chose 0-60 because of the LC feature. Without it, I don't think results would be meaningful. |

I finally took the time to perform the follow up.
Good news: LC still exists after the PPK upgrade. It was early morning on a Sunday. Roads were deserted. Weather was as perfect as it could be. 47* F, no wind. Location 1: 0-60 --> 5.01 s Location 2: 0-60 --> 4.92 s Location 3: 0-60 --> 4.94 s Average = 4.956s So, I got a 0.1 s improvement. Not quite the 0.2 s claimed by BMW. Notice the numbers were more consistent this time. Looking back, I don't know how I got that 4.71 s. I did several repeat tries and never got even close. It goes to show how much variance is involved in these types of measurements. One needs a lot better instruments than a G-Tech. Also, I noticed that the rear tires were breaking loose a lot more during take off. It was like driving a boat, fishtailing side to side (slightly). I'm sure I can get better numbers with better tires than these RFTs. |
