Quote of the year
Nope - not a literary quote!
I am referring to a quote received from my local dealer to retrofit the OEM BMW alarm system to my 2008 135i. Please see the DIY instructions within this very forum if you are curious about how much actual work is involved here. No explanation was provided with this quote. e.g. 1. I have no idea why a new headliner is required. 2. I have the auto dimming mirror package - hence no clown nose - but no explanation whether the new mirror (now with clown nose) will still have auto dimming. 3. No idea why a replacement lamp assembly is required - when the DIY example showed fitment of the ultrasonics to the existing lamp assembly and straightforward connection to the existing plug. Not quite sure how to respond to this. Think I will ignore it. I have found a viable alternative 'add-on' alarm system that links into the CAN BUS. It provides the missing functionality e.g. audible arm/disarm, siren, flashing lights, ultrasonics, tilt sensor etc. I believe that it also provides a trigger signal if you want to activate your GPS tracking when the alarm is set off. Oh, and finally threw a code and went into limp home mode the other day - with some luck I can now convince the dealer to replace the HPFP and be done with long cranking and lumpy starts for good (for a while at least). According to my March 2009 brochure, it was a $1000 option, including luxury car tax etc.
Still a bit of a rip off - but this quote made me LOL! anyway - the alternative I mentioned above is only about $500 fitted, from a brand and installer that I trust. Will let you know what it is like once fitted in a couple of weeks. Cheers Paul |

Paul, I'd be going with 'Go fuck yourself".

The exorbitant dealer charges, the average (compared to portable alternatives) Nav system, the extortionate Nav disc upgrade prices and the monopoly here in Perth are just a few of the things that will make me look at alternatives in a couple of years.

I'd respond with something like "wow, cheaper than i expected, when can drop it off (referring to the dildo they can use to go fu#$ themselves with and not your car)?" see if they pick up on the sarcasm....
On another note the $500 option sounds like a bargain without the above quote, so it's defiantly a viable solution. |

Trouble is.... there's so much money floating around amongst the cashed up WA mining fraternity that most would just pay whatever they get quoted. That's why the stealers try it on with the huge quotes.

They either don't want to do it or trying one on.

My advice is to wait for the car that you want to come along and don't be afraid to buy out of state. I bought mine from Brisbane BMW and the sales process was fantastic. I even saved a couple of grand on stamp duty and the process to transfer it to WA rego after 18 months on QLD plates could not have been easier.
I believe that the cost of an airfare to check out the car personally is easily covered by the savings in stamp duty (depending on the state) but irrespective, the wider range available over east makes the whole deal worthwhile. As for freight, this was included in the deal! Cheers Paul
