Question About 17"s

Okay, so this is going to seem like a total noob question, but here goes: I've got stock 17" wheels on my car (style 207M) and I actually kind of like them - they're not terribly common, for one thing (mainly because, as far as I can tell, most people either got their car with 18"s or upgraded). Now, I know people love their big wheels - personally, I can't imagine ever going bigger than 18" on this car - but I guess I'm wondering is even that much needed? From a performance standpoint, don't the lighter 17"s have a marginal advantage? I guess what I'm asking is, if I'm happy with the aesthetics of the 17" (and I am), is there any compelling reason to go bigger? Thanks for any input.

18's can provide more sidewall support. The 1 series is heavy, and it would take advantage of it. 18's don't have to be lighter. I'm sure there are a bunch of aftermarket 18's that are lighter then you're 17's.

BUT... if all you do is daily drive, and you don't turn laps at a track or autocross, you'll NEVER be able to prove a thing except say "it feels a little better". On the street 18's are for aesthetics. On the track, LIGHT 18's are for function.

Bimmer-Bob, your wheels are 22 1/2lbs each, about 4-6lbs less than the 135i's wheels. If you like them, stick with them, and be happy.

As paintpro21 pointed out, there are much lighter wheels to be had out there, even if you wanted a bigger wheel. Depends what you use the car for, or intent to use the car for.

Thanks for the responses, guys. As it turns out, my vehicle isn't being configured with the Style 207M wheels, but with the 262's, which I don't really care for. So I guess I'm in the market for 18"'s! Thanks again.
