I am actually very impressed with how fast this car actually is. I read that the manual was 5.7 seconds to 100km/h and the DSG was 5.5 however the lads over at motor have tested it and said they got 5.3 with a low 13 second quarter mile. I think its safe to say that after a simple ecu tune this thing would be running high 12s.

Yes the R runs almost identical times compared to the Evo X even with a severe power and torque deficit! Shows what the boffins can do at VW with the DSG. Can't imagine how good the Euro-spec 199kw engine would've been

I think VW over rated the 0-100 time. Work out the power to weight ratio of Golf R.

Nothing to do with VW's claims. This is MOTOR magazine's August Issue comparo between the Evo X and Golf R. Their quoted on-road figures:

0-100kph: Evo-5.30s; Golf-5.37s
0-400m: Evo-13.56; Golf-13.65
80-120: Evo-3.6s; Golf-3.6s

The Evo is around $20k more than the R as well.

What's the DA price on a R with a few essential options like a roof etc ? Anyone know.

Prior to buying the 1er - it was top of my list, but I needed to be in something before June 30 for tax reasons. Early june VW couldn't confirm a price.

Re performance - as I understand it, the car weighs the same, or more, than the 1er. Has less KWs & Nm's - so if it's pulling the same 0 - 100 as a 1er - that's almost against the laws of physics. Unless ofcourse they are relying heavily on gear ratio's as mentioned above

When I was at the Ring a few weeks ago... there was a sporty Golf testing there. Not sure IF it was an R or just a GTi Turbo... well.... that Golf woulnd come hauling around the track and that poor thing was understeering like a MoFo! Talk about being a Pig in Fox clothes. lol VAG = Nein Danke fur Mich!

Depends firstly on whether you go 3 or 5 door, DSG or manual, but i went with 5 door, DSG, Leather, Sunroof and 19" rims and am paying low $60's.

The fact that it is 4Motion will improve the 0-100 time comparing to our RWD Bimmer.

Well MOTOR mag pulled 5.22s for their bone stock 135i long termer. We're also faster to 400m.

Our cars are still ahead of the Evo and R for straight line performance.

I would have to agree, having test drove two 135i's before ordering the R, the BMW definitely felt quicker when you planted it.

That's the thing, it's not $20k more than the GTI, RRP there is only $10k difference, once you start adding some options to the GTI which are standard on the base R the difference becomes even smaller, plus obviously your getting 4wd over FWD.

^^^^ interesting.... Well, I had made my mind up to buy the R site unseen. It was purely by chance that I was given a 125 loaner that got me thinking about the 1er coupe. Then VW couldn't confirm pricing etc etc.

With 20 20 hind site - Think I would have been tempted with the R given the price difference.

But as I said.... lurv the 1er.

Gunna get it tuned ?

I was looking at the 2008 Golf R (an S3) and had the same issues - couldn't confirm pricing/options etc for the 5-door.

Took a look at a 135i while I was waiting on Vaudirschgini, test drove it, never looked back.

Grats on the new R. A friend of mine in Sydney was lucky enough to get the 2nd one at the dealership. He loves it and so far no problems. It does feel noticeably slower in a straight line to the 135 but corners like it is on rails.

Thanks mate, only trouble now is that i have to wait 3-4 months for it to arrive and having already sold my previous car not having a vehicle of my own is already becoming a major issue.

If worse comes to worse i may have to cancel the order and look for an alternative.
