Updating the head unit

I've owned my MY2011 135i for less than two months and the dull head unit is doing my head in. The small display makes reading the track info difficult, navigation by a multitude of buttons and dials is cumbersome and worse of all the time to load mp3 metadata is frustratingly slow.
Is it possible to replace the head unit for a perfect fitting double-DIN head unit and retain use of the steering wheel controls?

If you don't have idrive and don't want to bother with messing with the dashboard. They make frames for double DIN. When I get to the radio I plan on putting in a pioneer or kenwood that has apple CarPlay and navigation. It's better resolution then the idrive and I like that it won't be in my FOV when driving

So how does a double DIN fit? Do the head unit and air con unit get moved down?

So the air con unit can be moved down? Okay I'm going to need to check out some YouTube videos.

Yes. They get moved down. A kit is sold for this. If you really don't know I would take it to someone who knows what they're doing and ask them. Then do it yourself.
