Rusted Hubs

The rear wheel hubs on our 2008 135i are rusted, anyone else have this issue? Ideas for correction? Painting has crossed my mind but my concern is continuing rust problems.

Would that be covered under warranty?

NO. considered normal for untreated brake components.. there is no "repair" so other than re-painting yourself, you would have to replace them for strickly astetic reasons.

I took my 135i into my dealership a few months after my purchase back in 2009. I pointed out to them that all their new cars had rusted hubs and that it was ridiculous to sell cars with rusted components. They agreed and replaced them for free. The downside is that they are completely rusted again only 2 years later. They said if it happened again to it back and they would replace them again, "supposedly". I haven't tried that yet but I'd imagine that they won't replace them again.

Yes, I have the same issue. It's more than likely a cost cutting measure by BMW. The actual cost to galvanize or coat the part probably did not save them much, but someone made the decision. Typical...similar to US Mfg not galvanizing certain parts of cars sold in the South just to save a $.

It's not actually the hub.. It's the brake caliper.. Mine are rusted as well.

Actually you're both wrong. The hub on the early models do rust, I believe they started painting the hubs in the later models (I might be wrong here!). The rotors will rust as well (after you wash the car, etc.), but every rotor will, unless they're carbon ceramic or some sort of exotic composite.

You can't see the hub while the wheel is mounted to the car... Set up is generally Hub<---Rotor<---Wheel<---Outside of car.

A technicality...the hub is the center of the rotor where the axle fits into a bushing/bearing. We all knew what he meant and they should have been coated with WC/CoCr or NiCr or other type of powder to prevent corrosion.

Rotor/Hub Rust - Fix

All:

I noticed mine too, just the other day. In the past what I have done is used a brush / sand paper to get the rust off and then "paint it" with anti-seize. It worked well in the past and lasted. I did this on my 550i and I'll get around to it on the 1 soon.
