wow... ichiban. i gotta say, we got some stuff in common!
first, i had my first wash yesterday and it was freezing cold since it was so windy! second, i have a nikon D50... well, yours is newer. that camera is fun. i m a beginner also. you should to go marin headlands and angel island for some great shots of the bay. or you can go to the conservatory of flowers in GGP if you want to take macros of flowers/plants. |

Don't worry, I bought my D40 with the kit and I haven't had time to use it until now since I don't work. My pictures are slowly getting better than point and shoot, but I've been reading online and trying different options and they're turning out pretty good.

Hot car, kool pics. Photoshop Elements is a very useful, if not required, program for a Nikon, plus, Elements is relatively inexpensive. The program will absolutely transform you images. For some years I have been using a Nikon 5400 Coolpix on a tripod, plus Photoshop to capture publication images. Give PS a test drive.

Wide angle and macro lens are two completely different kinds. Macro lets you get really close and take detailed shots while wide angle requires you still get close but you get more into the pic at that distance. Stop using Auto Modes if you still are it lets you become familiarized with the camera. If you want to invest in a new lens get a wide angle (17-40) or a 70-200 f2.8. The quality of the lens is important and you will see a difference in your pics if you buy garbage. So I recommend saving up and buying good stuff. If you plan to take pictures of cars invest in a tripod also, this will let you not worry about opening the aperture and slowing the shutter. Another thing keep your ISO low (100) so your pictures do not look too grainy. PhotoShop is a must too. The things that you can do with that program are ridiculous.
WIDE ANGLE MACRO WIDE ANGLE: this shot was taken 3 feet away by my friend in a trunk WIDE ANGLE The first 2 pictures are not my friend's. I just found them online to give an example. However the car ones are his.

Since my buddy has a bunch of canon stuff im not too familiar with nikon. But I think some sigmas are good and some are crap so be careful. You should definately join a forum and read up on this stuff, it makes all the difference in the world. The forum will also have used stuff for sale. And if you want new stuff the best place to shop is B&H
If you continue shooting cars, shot in aperature priority modes so you dont have to worry about the shutter speeds. This is when the tripod will help. The tirpod needs to be able to hold a decent amount of weight or else it will shake and give you blurry pics
