POP protection is available on new V-1 detectors and as an update on older units.

I don't advise that you place much stock in Radartest.com. Scrutiny of their web site will give you a good idea of their objectivity.

Escort Passport 8500 X50

Back in 1989 in New Jersey I had 44 points on my license.
Went out & bought a radar detector, never a ticket again.
16 years later & a flawless driving record.
Those that say they don't work haven't a clue.

I bought a new V1 to go with my new E90 and I LOVE it. The arrows are indispensible now that I tried them. If you're skeptical about the value of the arrows, read some of the stories in the testimonials section of the V1 website.

I sold my Passport 8500 after a month. it was garbage.
I am going to try bel RX65 a try. If that thing is a garbage too, it'll be V1.
I heard nothing but compliments about V1(w/ newest software).

According to tests however, it seems like 8500 X50 gets the best scores.

Also, interesting story I heard from this guy I know. He got busted in school zone for going 35 in 20. Cop was a really cool cop. The cop noticed my friend's Escort 8500, and asked him if he can test it out. IIRC, he was shooting from about 20feet away. It took about 5~6 full seconds for the 8500 to go off. Cop told him, "whoa, thats pretty fast. I tried the samething on other detectors, and most of them took 10seconds or above.". My friend asked him, "was mine the fastest?" the cop said, "no. there was one that took less than 3 seconds I think. it was the one with the arrows". Last I talked to him, he said the 8500 was sold in ebay and searching for V1 for a decent price.

After the experience with the police officer and the experience with the Escort, I'm surprised that you are spending money to try the Bel detector. Surely you took a $ hit when the Escort was sold and you will likely take another if you sell the Bel!

I don't know what "scores" you refer to but the scoring methodology and the motivation of the testing organization is important.

I'm surprised at the story of lux.sh's friend. I would have thought that the detection of head-on radar was almost instantaneous. 5-6 seconds or even 3 seconds sounds like a long time to me.

exactly. thats what I was freaked out about. I thought even cheap $20 radar detector would go off instantly from that distance...

one question about the V1

i have had a passport for several years and it is becoming obscelete. i am thinking about buying another one from passport. possibly the solo, just because i hate the cord hanging in the cabin.

what is appealing about the v1, event though it is loot!, is that the software is upgradable for a few hundred more when it gets updated.

has anyone done this, does anyone know how difficult it really may be to send in the v1 for a software upgrade, just curious.

i would love to have a hardwired v1 just below my rearview mirror!! :rocks:

That's not a cool cop, but a smart one; you can bet he reported his findings so that those cops can adjust their guns and how they use them.

Next time listen to your parents - just say NO.

Yes. I have had one of my V-1 units updated twice in the 10 + years that I have owned it. All you need to do is ship it to Valentine Research (keep the original shipping box) with a note and CC #. They will normally turn it around in 24 to 48 hours. The same is true if you have a warranty problem. Valentine is super with respect to customer service just like their unit which provides superior protection. Valentine is prime beef while the others are hamburger.

Two points:

1. Beware of cordless detectors. They have too little power to be very good.

2. V1 is upgradable from a lot less than "a few hundred" dollars. I haven't updated mine yet since it is new, but I had heard a number closer to $70.

Well it wasn't my experience as far as the police officer story goes, but yes, I was disappointed with escort.
I am a bit surprised too that I am still willing to try the RX65. I don't know anything for sure.

I take it you are a V1 owner. I didn't quite understand your comment regarding "scoring/testing is important". help me understand.

how do you like the V1 btw? please convience me to buy one. I can't make the damn decision yet.

Want to see what convinced me? Read this!! Also browse other testimonials reachable from the same page. You'll see examples that tell you about the usefulness of the arrows and counter. Many of what you read there simply cannot be achieved with any other detector. After spending a long time reading some of these fascinating stories, I placed an order immediately!
