The electronic one took one of our master tech's 2 hours during his first attempt... 2nd attempt shouldn't take more than 1 - 1.5 hours

I'm curious about the installation. I've done quite a bit of work to my previous cars but never a steering wheel swap...

Lead time shouldn't be too long. Just got off the phone w/ BMW NA yesterday and said they're waiting on one more approval signature, and then it's go time!

Economy is exactly how it sounds - crusing around town

Sport mode is for checking your G's, etc

Race mode is your lap timer. Also available is a track side device that will more accurately record your lap time. However, this will be an additional cost

What is the last 7 digits of your VIN #? I'll check, but if you have a non-sport I'm thinking you'll need an airbag

For the non-electronic, the difficulty level is 3 out of 10 for someone who works on cars but not on a technician level. The electronic wheel is 6 out of 10 IMO

Disconnect battery

You pop your airbag out by poking two holes in the back of your steering wheel where the airbag clips in.

Remove the airbag, unplugging all of the electronic controls for steering wheel functions & airbag control

Use (I can't remember what size - huge anyway) a socket to undo the steering wheel from the column

Use a torx screw driver to remove steering wheel buttons and trim

Install new wheel by repeating steps backwards

bmw.com says that

in ECO mode the shift lights facilitate my economical driving style. I assume this simply refers to the customizable mapping of optimal shift points for the lights. Further, that the lights aren't auto remapped in ECO mode but rather the shift points can be manually set and stored per mode. Correct? Nothing else to eco?

Sport mode contains stopwatch, fuel consumption, g-meter. 1/4 mile timer here too?

Race mode contains split-time functions (stop, lap, section) and memory for last and top times, g-meter, 1/4 mile.

Oil and radiator temps in all 3 modes.

For those thinking DIY, I found this bmw install manual for the older model electronic wheel.

Im definitely interested in the non-electric steering wheel. But I don't know if I'll be able to install it. I have a 2008 135 with auto, sports pkg.

1) Does the install require any coding?
2) How am I supposed to install the paddle shift on the new wheel?
3) All the control buttons install are basically unplug --> plug right?
4) I can just use the airbag from my old steering wheel right?

Please let me know.
