Tire Pressure & RFT

Is anyone else's RFT slowly losing pressure, or is it just me?

All 4 of my tires lose about 2PSI per month or a bit more, brand new from the dealer. Maybe it's the RFTs... not sure.

But I've definitely noticed that a difference of 2-4PSI in the tires under pressure makes the ride a LOT harsher. Once they're back to 36/38 the ride is much, much smoother.

Maybe this is why people hate RFTs - they're sensitive to pressure?

As every month gets colder, the pressures will be lower too! Something to consider as well.

i was actually surprised. checked my pressures for the first time in 3 months. only dropped 1 psi.....unless the factory over filled them, lol.

I agree with the "cold weather" drop in pressure.
I have 16 tires to care for.....checked them the other day due to the recent temperature drop and all had dropped 2 to 3 psi (except one on the Integra that was down 12 psi...woops)

It's that time of the year people.......check your pressures !

Your ride gets harsher when the tires have 2~4 lbs less pressure??

I has learnt that RFT suppose to lose pressure quicker than normal tires. 2 in a month is about right.

RFTs will loose about that much. Don't worry.

This thread is lame. All tyres will slowly lose pressure. Rubber is not 100% impermeable to gas. Especially gas under pressure.

While it seems trendy around here to bash RFT's, is there any credible evidence that they lose pressure any faster than any other tyre? I doubt it.

my last car didn't need air for an entire year. Checked it every 2 month

How much did the pressure vary from summer to winter when you checked it? If it didn't change, you either checked the pressures in a heated garage after the car had sat there for a few hours or more (a bad idea if the ambient temperature is much different outside), or your pressure gauge was faulty. From an ambient average of about -25C in the winter to +25C in the summer (the sort of temperatures Ottawa can see in any year) requires about 10 PSI of pressure change, so you were either running dangerously low or excessively high pressures in the tyres at some point if you didn't add or remove air for a year.

It's a bit odd, but likewise my ride is significantly harsher even when the air pressure has only decreased by a few pounds.

From my experience of tracking, 2PSI can make a huge difference in the stickiness and stiffness of a tire. 4PSI is probably a night and day difference. Iv been meaning to try Nitrogen filling since its a more consistent reading after a long drive.

From the average mild summer temps this year to last Saturday when the temps were around 55F, my rears went from 40psi to 33psi, pretty much the same drop in the front. The temps are expected to stay around the 55-60F range during the day, with drops to 32F at night.

I run 2psi higher than recommended for daily use as my commute is highway speeds, and I feel a slight better steering response with a bit more pressure.
