Recommended protection for 1M

Hi all,

Recently I posted a thread about trying to find an AW 1M, I finally found one at my local dealership (SA). They called me as I was about to board a flight to LA last week. I cant wait till I get back from holidays, but I was thinking about what I should get done to the car to protect it; specifically - tint, paint protection, clear bra, leather protection.

What's the general consensus on the above and what brands/products work best for the 1m?

It wont be my daily driver, but will still see a fair few Kay's each year and I want to keep this car.

I've ordered a 1m car cover from the local dealer in Vegas which I'll pick up before I leave, but it's great to have some incentive to get back on the plane to Aus next week

Cheers,
Matt

Congrats Matt! You will absolutely love the car!

Re: protection - the dealer stuff is more or less a rort with high margins. But they do provide lifetime warranties - which is good but hard to claim on.

If you want to keep the car and really protect it. I suggest taking it to a place like Final Inspection and getting a Full Metal Jacket treatment. Which will seal and protect the paint. AlpineE92M3 will be able to provide details - sure he'll chime in shortly.

I have a clearbra (3M Venture Shield) on mine and it has been great. Covers half the bonnet, front guard, front bumper and mirrors. Make sure you get the rear wheel arch and rocker panels covered too - the wide wheels really throw a lot of crap there. It's discolouring now but they are replacing it. I'm told Ozicosi in Sydney do good work.

With leather protection: there is no one stop shop. A good cleaner and conditioner applied often - monthly or so is the only way to go. Leather breathes and absorbs so needs to well taken care of for the long run. I use Swissvax but there are better stuff and worse stuff...

Most importantly, take it Andrew at SouthernBM or somewhere like that every 6 months for all the fluids to be replaced. BMW service schedule is a joke.

Others with more knowledge and local advise will be ble to help you also.

the Finishing Touch sold by my dealership is like a clear coat applied to the interior & exterior . they said it will protect the interior from spills , sun rays...same thing for the exterior . so far i haven't really noticed a difference on the exterior as my BSM 1M still catches dirt at the same pace as my previous black cars . the benefit for the interior is noticeable though , the clear coat makes swiping dirt & dust a breeze .

Congrats on the 1M, and like the others have stated, STAY away from the dealers so called "protection".. Not worth it..

Like Ian and alik01, I also will have the have the clearbra (3M Venture Shield) fitted.

Congrats on "winning" that car, seriously you were in the right place at the right time for sure well done.

As Alik said, if you can get finalinspection.com to do both interior and exterior do it! My (well Mrs Alpine's car) car after 9 months beads water like it does off a ducks back. Very highly recommended.

I ordered mine precut from Laminx.com and had a local sign writing company that do work for us fit it - somewhat reluctantly.

It has discoloured somewhat so they are now sending a new wrap.

A user called 1SeriesStud had another manufacturers wrap installed and I must say the product looks better. I'm on the phone so can't search his posts. I would check that out too.

Also, pay a bit extra and get the full guards, full bonnet, full rocker panel and rear wheel arch covered. These areas get hammered - especially at the track.

My 3M film is about 6 months old. There is significant yellowing and also certain areas turned pink. After some back forthing Lamin-X have sent a new set.

I ordered mine with their UV protect kit but doesn't seem to have helped.

Ianf, do you know what sealant we are supposed to be using?

OP, I agree on using the film most often by the installer.

Thanks Ian. The paint protection film used by Lamin-X is 3M Venturesheild apparently.

Will check out the sealant as well - thanks.

Ian, where did get your 3M Ventureshield supplied and installed? Does it take long, i.e. can I wait for the install and drive away when done? Thanks

I've had my film on for over three years. No discolouring that I can see on my blue car.

From what I got from them. The other bits like headlight protectors are their own proprietary product. The paint protection is 3M Ventureshield.

It's a lot to do with the sun up here and also my car has taken a beating. I'm also not a 100% what the detailer is using on it.

I'm sure your's will be fine with the sealing etc...

If it's any consolation - the manufacturer replaced it under warranty anyway.

Matt, I'll send you a PM regarding all of your queries listed.

I have recommend Andrew at OziCozi to a few of the 1Ms here (ianf and Zuzu, etc).

I've had it on my car for over 3 years without any issues.
No yellowing, cracking or fading.

Most people can barely see mine until I tell them that it's there

Just noticed you are from Brisbane. I'm about to get into one of the M Sport plus editions in Carbon Black and thinking of getting this Clear bra applied also. Can I ask who did your job in Brisbane?
