I"d vote this as the truism of the year
each time I go on the bm' configurator I find myself lookink at the 3rd cup holder, the automatic lights that adjust with the heat of your coffee in the 2nd cup holder....while all I want is a good blast when you hit the throtle

the 135i starts at $35,000 and with a "normal" options load runs around $40,000.
yeah, $25,000 to $30,000 seems very likey after 18-24 months....

Just built a 135i coupe on the BMWNA site with everything checked - $48,400 and by adding the accessory wheels, it's slightly over $50k. The droptop is $52,295 - with the M Aerodynamic kit, it comes to just $5 under $55,000!
Isn't the residual value for most BMW's something like 56% after 3 years? If so, the OP should probably wait 3 years & pick up a CPO model.

He wasn't asking about a vert! Also adding $3-5k in wheels doesn't count. I also don't think he was talking about having everything the car can come equipped with actually equipped....At least the one I built had the normal things that people on this very site were adding to theirs.

You might be able to find a loaded 135i that cheap in a few years. The one thing I can say.. it will not be mine.

He didn't specifiy coupe or cabrio - unless you interpret his use of 135is to refer to a coupe - which hasn't been the case since the E36. And why wouldn't "fully loaded" include the wheels ($1,700 from BMW, not $3~5k)? Besides, I didn't even add in the floor mats
Something I think we missed was that he talks about buying a "new 135i" for $25~30k. Does he think that BMW is going to lower it's prices in the next couple of years, or is he hoping for a rise in the U.S. dollar?

With every option, including an automatic transmission, it's $48,995. Add about $4K in sales tax and the car is well over $50K. (a manual is $47,620)

I would think a 2008 135i MSRP of say $38k now could be had for about $29k with 30k miles in 2 years.

Take the new MSRP and in 2 years with average mileage multiply it by 75%. In 3 years multiply it by 65%.

Thanks! But every option? I didn't do the auto though, which would explain my price. But still who orders a car with every available option; I can see all the packages and adding CA, iPod, HiFi, and HD w/Sat. But every option is a little ridiculous.

If you order all the packages, CA, iPod, HiFi and HD w/Sat the only options you wouldn't be adding would be Nav and Park Distance Control. Nav is almost always considered part of a "loaded" car, so really the only thing would be PDC which is only $350.

I leased both 1ers on the basis that they are 'year 1' cars (w/o the Year of the 1 ring, bah). By year 3, it may have been facelifted to heck... OR the 4dr hatch arrives, YUM! If I really like it after the lease, then I may buy it out. EVERYTHING including service is covered for the duration of the lease (got the damage&tire for cheap). If it's still in one piece and not rattling all over, it's a keeper.

They rated the residuals at 59%.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing when I get my 1 next year. Say after 3 years you buy it and keep it for another 2 years...would you think that potentially because of the ever rising gas prices our cars would be worth significantly less since they have relatively large engines? I know the a 3.0L I6 isn't "large," but considering the more efficient cars that may be coming up in the next few years, I guess it could be considered a high-consuming car and worth less than a car in this class would typically be worth after 3-4yrs? What do you think?

my current 335i is pretty loaded (step, pp, sp, cwp ~$48k MSRP) and after 1.5 years and 13k miles, I'd be lucky to see $38k for the vehicle. options, while helpful, DON'T increase the residual THAT much because a NEW one could be had, albeit somewhat less equipped, for that amount. 99% of people opt for a less equipped NEW vehicle with a full warranty remaining than a slightly used better equipped vehicle for the SAME $.

the best way to know is to use the BMW residuals and predict that way. anyone who thinks a 135i coupe CAN'T be had for under $30k in 2 years is smoking CRACK. Put the pipe down and step away....

You will easily be able to get one.. that's out of warranty (50k+ miles).

The 1 is a solid and I mean solid car. But if your budget is $25k stick to the E46 or E36. They are the most solid cars (the E46 or E39) that still have that modern style. Those three models have a break-in point of 100,000 miles.. then they start feeling goooooooooooood.

A budgeted 135i, 335i, or E46 M3 will really hurt your wallet in repairs. Nothing is cheap for the N54 motor, nor the S54.

There will be hardly any 135i's on the market less than $25k if they hold up as well as BMW has claimed.

The residual on my 2 year lease is 77%, which puts it at $29,249.75. This is for a 128i.
