Aggressive 17" setup - doable?
I'd like to switch to 17" tires/wheels for track duty.
First, here's my current setup: - 18x8.5 ET45 Apex ARC-8; (Front+Rear) - 255/35-18 Hankook RS-3 - Coil overs, camber plates, fenders rolled etc... Here's what I'd like to do: Option 1: - 17x8.5 ET40 or ET45 (harder to find) light weight rims - 255/40-17 Nitto NT-01 all around Option 2: - 17x8.5 ET40/ET45 front - 17x9.5 ET ??? rear - 255/40-17 front - 275/??-17 rear Questions for you: 1. Has anybody ever done an aggressive 17" setup like this? 2. For option 2, what rear offset would I need? 3. Other options? Thanks! |

How did you get 255 up front?

Those are good questions..
Can you tell me where I can buy a 17x8.5" ET45 rim for BMW fitment? I think its very hard to find. I'm more interested in using it on the E82 rear. I don't think it would fit on the front without using a spacer |

To both you and ginger extract. Let me know how it's working out. I would like to square away my setup and run 17's. Any spacer needed for the et50 rims you're running?

Depends how wide your tires and what suspension you're running but I could see an instance where'd you'd need 5-8mm if you ran a wide (245-255) tire.

I was running 17x8.5 ET40. had fenders rolled and stretched and some additional nip and tuck inside the rear fenders to run 255/40 Toyo RA1. lots of rubbing at first until I swapped out to stiffer springs and bumped up the height by .25". 255/40 will not work in the front but if you can find 255/35 you may have better luck. I was running 235/40 in the front. my 245/40 BFG R1 square set up worked like a charm

here's someone that did a 255/40/17 with Z1's, don't know how wide Z1's run, but have heard Z2's run wider than the Z1's.

Autocross is in the bag and I'm happy to report that it worked.
Front is no problem at all, rear is borderline. Very slight rubbing on the right rear over bumps at speed. I can live with that. |

Also, to clarify, I will be running a different wheel up front (APEX ARC8) than the rear (BMW Style 68M). Finding the right offset wheel to fit a 17x8.5 in the rear is tricky, so I'm mixing and matching. For some people, this would be an aesthetic turn off, and they would want to look elsewhere. These are a dedicated track setup, so I don't care about ultimate style points.
