Help with strange sound from transmission

I am starting to get a noticebly louder sound from what I think is the transmission. When the car is stopped and in neutral, I can hear a faint rattle or whirring sound. Frankly, it sounds like a helicopter. When I depress the clutch the sound stops. Release the clutch and the helicopter is in my trunk again. It's faint, so I can't tell if it's still present when in gear and driving. Any ideas?

How loud is it?
I am thinking dual mass flywheel chatter, but that shouldn't be very loud.

noise if faint, but I never noticed it before so I'm sure it's a new issue. I'm pretty sensitive to the noises my car makes. I can only hear with radio off. Still faint.

That sound is normal for BMW's with a manual transmision. Its the dual mass flywheel flexing and dampening the vibrations.

I would say "the sound" is more like that of a bunch of marbles in a metal coffee can. As long as the noise goes away when you step on the clutch - this noise is normal.

If you turn off the engine you will also hear the flywheel make some noises as the rpms slow to nil. IF you depress the clutch while switching off the engine, you won't hear that noise. I also turn off the engine with the clutch pedal depressed.

By marbles in a coffee can, do you mean swirling the marbles around in a circular pattern, rather than shaking the can? I think the sound I'm hearing could very well match the sound of marbles being swirled in a can. Stirred not shaken! Bond would be mortified.

Yes, that is the sound. It is normal.

Sometimes changing the trans oil might change the noise a bit. Sometimes not. Its really not harming anything inside the trans though.

Still... you might have your dealer listen to your trans noise - see what they think.

Thanks. I'll add to the very short list of items next time I make it to the dealer.
