iPhone snap-in adapter question
I've been informed that the OEM snap-in adapter for the iPhone does not work to its full potential in Australia. Apparently it will charge the iPhone, but will not allow you to play the music on it.
Can anyone confirm if this is correct? United BMW's website (USA) states that it "allows access to any music or MP3 files stored on the phone": http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=MorePartInfo&PartID=784537&siteid =215011&catalogid=6218

Partly true. I have 3G Iphone and snap in adaptor. Cannot play music from it.
Apparently you need in addition the smartphone option for your car in order for the music to work. |

I think I read somewhere you can only either have the iPod cable (BMW Y-cable) or the snap-in adapter in use at any one time. Perhaps the reports of the inability to play music is where the Y-cable was also in use simultaneously, or at least still plugged in?

So I picked up my snap in adaptor for my iPhone 3GS today. Very easy to install, just remove the plastic try and it clicks straight in. The smart phone integration option was not available as an option from factory when I ordered the car so I am not able to play music from my iphone 3GS. You need to have specified this option from factory if you want to use this function.
It does however sit in the arm rest very nicely and it charges my iphone which is all I wanted it for. I have a 32GB flash stick plugged into the USB slot which I leave in the car permanently and it plays all my music flawlessly and has more than enough space. This works well for me as I never plan to leave my iphone in the car and if somebody ever breaks into my car all they will steal is my USB stick which can be easily replaced. There was no 'warning message' or 'airplane mode' message when I plugged it in, the snap in adaptor works a charm. Very happy with the purchase and I recommend it to anyone who needs a dedicated place to put their iphone and keep it charged while driving. I am yet to properly test out the sound and reception quality because I'm told by using the snap in adaptor it uses the cars external antenna. I made a quick call and it doesn't seem any better, which isn't a bad thing because it worked fine before. |

As I said in my above post, for the snap in adaptor to play music through your iphone you need to have ordered the "smart phone integration" option from factory. It's just another option like Comfort Access or Sunroof etc. Without this you can never play music through your iphone. Unfortunately, in Australia we never even had the option of specifying this option anyway.

In that case you probably have the wrong snap in adaptor. There are 2 variants. One only charges the phone and acts as a dock whilst the other one supports Smart Phone Integration option. The latter is more expensive.

Don't quote me on this but I thought the "smart phone integration" came with MY2010 build ie: from Sept 09.

Confirmed for 2010 build cars the option 06NF "Connectivity Music Player" (Smart Phone Integration) is available.
Ive ordered a Jan 2010 build car, and when i first signed that option was not on the dealers "option list". After phoning up later and asking about the option and providing the 06NF option code they told me it is available, still waiting on the price to add it to my car, but his initial investigation told him $200 ish. |

6NF can be seen as a waste of money IMHO. Basically you pay $200 for 6NF then another $250 for the snap in adaptor. The $200 6NF option only gives you the advantage of playing music from your iphone, thats it. Without that option you still get all the functions from the snap in adaptor besides being able to play the music.
The $200 you save you can easily spend on purchasing a USB stick that you can leave permanently in your car without the worry of it being stolen as they are so easily replaceable. |
