Severe shuddering during cruising and braking

So driving today I realised something wasn't right with my car:
  • When I accelerate normally or have any throttle input it's totally fine
  • When I cruise, (i.e. in gear but no throttle input) the whole car starts shuddering quite noticeably with a knocking sound
  • If I put it into neutral and cruise it seems fine, but as soon as I put it into gear and clutch out there are quite a few loud knocks before the car starts shuddering again
  • When I brake relatively hard, I also get the same shuddering and knocking sound

The thing that confuses me is that all this goes away as soon as I touch the throttle, but it seems quite obvious that something is wrong in the drivetrain. Tried going up and down my driveway tonight and there is definitely also a distinct "thump" everytime I brake, which leads me to think that it is a problem in the wheels/suspension.

Any ideas what this could be? Thanks in advance for the input.

Hmmm I have no idea what it could be but I don't think it's to do with the wheels or the suspension. If it were, it would happen at all times. If it only happens when coasting out of gear or when braking it sounds like something that happens only when the engine and transmission isn't being loaded so I'd guess that the problem is something to do with either the engine or more likely the transmission.

Of course I could be totally wrong.

That's what gets me - it doesn't happen when there is load on the engine transmission, so I thought it was possible drivetrain related.

But then I don't get why it also happens when everything is in neutral and I brake with some force, which is why I was led to believe it was outside the drivetrain.

Sounds weird, and difficult to diagnose going on the description!

So obviously no codes? I was getting slight jerking stumbling at low revs (i.e coming into a tight corner under no acceleration just coasting) and new vanos solenoids and o2 sensors sorted that out but from what you describe it sounds like its a driveline issue?

Does the clutch feel fine? IS the noise coming from the rear (I'm thinking diff possibly?)

I think it may be the driveshaft. Guibo? I had a Z3 used to do that a little between shifts,

Just a thought...

Turned out to be a loose rear left wheel. Someone had kindly undid all the bolts (except for the locking nut) when my car was parked on Saturday.

Hmm really!!! any chance someone was in the midst of flogging your rims and you turned up to drive away?? do you have a lock bolt on yours?

At least that's an easy fix, but could have turned out nasty!!!!
