Just had my stage 1 1M dyno tuned by Cobb...

Hi guys,

I just had my 1M dyno tuned by Cobb Plano. They did had one of their staff come up from Austin to do the tune. Their facility and staff are first rate and I would definitely recommend them to anyone in Texas who needs a tune.

My goal in modifying my 1M was simply to correct BMW's aesthetic issues (the exterior chrome bits had to go) and design shortcomings (sub-par FMIC for +90 degree days, use of 4 cats, etc.). Since this car stretches my budget enough as it is, I also tried to keep within a reasonable cost-benefit ratio (i.e., no permanent or risky changes to the car and is also easy to install/remove/resell).

Given than I'm not trying to set any new records and my car will, sadly, never see a drag strip or road course, I asked Cobb to keep my tune conservative.

Needless to say, I am very satisfied with the car's performance and the grouping of mods that I chose. Cobb mentioned that the only other mod to consider would be to replace the factory downpipe and retune the car to add 30-40 horsepower with my setup. Very tempting but I'd probably be looking at $2k total for a catted downpipe, installation, and a retune ... which puts this out of my budget for now. After driving the 1M, it was immediately noticeable that the tune had smoothed out the powerband and improved top end performance.

To those of you who still have a stock car, you should really really consider replacing the midpipe with an N55 midpipe (catless) or equivilient. This is a very easy and inexpensive mod that completely gets rid of that annoying 60-65 mph highway drone. It looks OEM and improves throttle response. HIGHLY recommended. I live in the south and my car seemed really susceptible to heat soak... After upgrading the FMIC, performance was stronger and much more consistent. I now understand why the BMW development team was disappointed that they didn't have enough of a budget to redesign the factory intercooler which is clearly sub-par in warm climates.

Enough of my rambling ... below are my mods and dyno chart:

Before:
322 RWHP / 450 RTQ / 18.5 PSI
Cobb Stage 1 93 Oct Tune (Off the Shelf v.3.01)

After:
353 RWHP / 458 RTQ / 19.5 PSI
Cobb Stage 1 93 Oct Tune (Custom-tuned)

Mods:
Cobb Accessport
Black side markers
Black front kidney grills
Forge DVs
ER Charge Pipe
5" ETS FMIC (did not want to do any trimming)
ETS FMIC hard piping
BMW N55 Midpipe (for OEM appearance)
aFe Stage 2 intake

No - I was lazy and didn't want to drive a two hour round trip to get base line numbers. Cobb's dyno database has some stock and stage 2 1M runs that should be pretty close. Appreciate the comment.

Just wondering how you and your rear tires are coping with all the extra torque.

I'd be curious to see how this stacks up against the OTS Stage 1+ V4.02 maps

Stock 1m's on Mustang Dyno are almost always right around 292 whp. Your numbers look good!

Catless down pipes and also meth would be the next two things you could do to add power.

I have only tested the car in dry conditions but as long as the pavement is smooth, first and second gear are still manageable. 400+ crank hp is probably at or near the safe traction limit for a daily driver.

Very nice numbers, thanks for posting! I'm assuming opening up the DPs would allow the tuner to hold the boost until closer to redline. You have a pretty decent taper coming on at 3600 RPM ending at around 11.5 to 12 PSI at 6500 RPM.

If im honest, how do we know that the gains your achieved are any good if you dont know where you started, for all I know the car only gained 20whp. Not saying that to be the case but in a custom tune I dont understand how you cant have a baseline.

Torque is what causes the traction issue. Were your test done with the traction control turned off?

He did provide a baseline. The baseline was the COBB OTS map vs. the custom tuned map that was tuned for mild gains specific to his car and would still be pretty conservative.

Regardless of how much power he gained from a bone stock car, the dyno chart shows a GREAT "overall'' through the entire RPM range increase and shows just how much room there really is left in a custom file over the OTS map, especially from COBB.

The OP is just sharing his graph and we have to just take it for what it is. He mentioned it is a daily driver and will never see a track anytime soon, if at all. He dosnt want to go crazy and only wanted a little more power over what he had.

OP, thanks for sharing this graph and info for our community and thanks to COBB for providing tuning options and giving you a nce custom map that you are happy with. Me next!

Exactly. I don't care too much about how my car performed when stock or about adding enough power to reach an arbitrary number. I bought a 1M because the complete package appeals to me as it is and my mods were simply to address its compromises - as is the case with just about any 100% stock turbo car nowadays.

To me, the takeaway from my dyno chart is to get a general idea as to what the powerband for the 1M looks like for those looking at stage 1. As others have mentioned in this post, a stage 2 powerband (with downpipe) would probably look noticeably different and be an even better indicator of what the N54 can do.

I can echo the comments here about the N55 pipes and FMIC. I started with a remap only which took my car to 401 BHP (flywheel). After the midpipes and the FMIC were installed, this figure increased to 431 BHP. Throttle response improved massively along with a noticble improvement in the way it now holds stronger boost for longer.

Would you attribute the increased throttle response to the mid-pipe?

No it's a combination of the midpipes, Intercooler and remap I'd say. The midpipes alone did pep it up a bit, but not as much as all three bits combined.

TX1SERIESM,

Any pictures of your 1M with the side markers?

Any more feedback about the performance? What do you consider to be the "best" of your mods... say, if you had to choose the top 3?

Chris, which brand of FMIC did you go with?

Is the tune very important to achieve the improved throttle response, or will the mid pipe and FMIC do the trick?

I don't have any photos but it looks like all the other alpine white 1Ms that are posted in the pictures section since I just did the markers and kidney grills.

Personally I'd get a n55 or aftermarket mid pipe since it will help with throttle response. After that I would think replacing the fmic with an aftermarket direct fit 5" unit would be effective since the affect will not be about gaining power but keeping temperatures lower in summer months (the factory fmic is a real pos after you mod). Any other mods after this would probably be best purchased together as a stage (see my original post above for a complete list).

A pretty impressive bump in power for a retune. Love the work Cobb does!

I've always been a big fan of the N55 midpipe mod. Glad you are liking it too!
