Why can't you have the dealer replace them?

Out of warranty most likely.

Have the dealer replace them. Not that expensive.

Funny.. my n55 vanos crapped out at the dealer last week...still under warranty though.

see thread:

NOT THE SHEARED BOLT ISSUE. I have the thrown code in that thread. the unit just crapped out on a test drive after all new brakes.

He told me it would have been a $4000 job should my warranted been expired.

not exactly cheap.

$4000 for a repair job is just rediculus. You can replace engines in some cars for less. This is why I am keeping my warantee as long as it lasts.

A little of topic but has anyone dropped a LS3 or LS7 in a 1er. I am not saying it is a good idea but the engines are a lot lighter than you would thing. GM made what they called the e-rod program where you can buy an engine, ecu, harness ect for a few LS engines to put in any car. It was designed originally for hot rods and customs but is widely used now. For 4gs I think you may not be far from dropping in a 500hp NA monster. The n54 is a great engine as well. I am just tossing around ideas not saying it should be done though

That's actually an interesting concept. Though, unless I'm mistaken you also need a compatible transmission, drive shaft diff and axles?
