Why can't you have the dealer replace them?

Funny.. my n55 vanos crapped out at the dealer last week...still under warranty though.
see thread: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=831971 NOT THE SHEARED BOLT ISSUE. I have the thrown code in that thread. the unit just crapped out on a test drive after all new brakes. He told me it would have been a $4000 job should my warranted been expired. not exactly cheap. |

$4000 for a repair job is just rediculus. You can replace engines in some cars for less. This is why I am keeping my warantee as long as it lasts.
A little of topic but has anyone dropped a LS3 or LS7 in a 1er. I am not saying it is a good idea but the engines are a lot lighter than you would thing. GM made what they called the e-rod program where you can buy an engine, ecu, harness ect for a few LS engines to put in any car. It was designed originally for hot rods and customs but is widely used now. For 4gs I think you may not be far from dropping in a 500hp NA monster. The n54 is a great engine as well. I am just tossing around ideas not saying it should be done though

That's actually an interesting concept. Though, unless I'm mistaken you also need a compatible transmission, drive shaft diff and axles?
