The downpipes are not a problem only pre-turbo. And the tune obviously.

Now the truth comes out, don't mislead people thinking they can go into a dealership with a modded car and expect it to get fixed under warranty.
That's nice you have a hook up! Wish I did...

Yes that obviously helps, but he told me that the downpipes would have no bearing on the turbo or the seals going. and they are warrantied up to 80k miles. More dealerships are going to be more strict than others.

It depends what your doing, and where I guess. If you are going in for a new motor under warranty, yeah have it without a tune. Luckily that really doesn't happen on this platform and we deal with turbo failures, water pumps HPFP etc. No actual motor failure for the most part. Most dealerships aren't going to check every car for a JB4 in the engine bay, just keep it off and you will be fine if its anything but extremely unusual warranty work IMO. They would have to pay their techs to spend man hours looking for tunes on all their performance cars. That time adds up. Also, the dealership WANTS to do work. If you go in for warranty turbo job, the dealership gets paid by BMW. If they say "not under warranty you have a tune" what do you do, drop $4k, or walk out the door and have it done at an indie for a fraction of the cost? Then the shop loses money because they wanted to try to screw you over for having a tune? It doesn't make sense. Downpipes are something they can't seem to overlook, being illegal in almost every state. |

Just went threw this myself and I went and got brand new Rb turbos. You should really look into a valve cover also. There are 3 valves in the valve cover. 1 pvc, 2 vacuum valve 3 boost valve. One of them could be stuck open. Just food for thought 30 k on turbos and they are blows sounds unlikely. Just my 2 cents. Good luck anyway

Blue whiteish smoke is oil burning from a small leak int he turbo. Catted downpipes can sometimes mask it slightly.
