Smile Oil Change 2011 BMW 128i

First Great Post....I have a 2011 BMW 128i ...I initially bougjt it and was going to sell it but decided to keep it because it only has 40000 miles on it .

In regards to Oil Change ....What is the recommended Filter and Oil (My oil cap says BMW recommends Castrol )

Also are youll recommending that you jack it up and put it on 4 jack stands to raise level for draining ? And is the capacity 7 qts ?

Also on the filter I see a guy using a socket wrwnch to get the top filter off ...why ?
Mine came off by hand ...Im just wondering if his is different

The current BMW recommended oil I use is Castrol 0-40 European from Walmart. Here's a link : https://www.walmart.com/ip/Castrol-E...-5-QT/35931146.

I add no more than 6 quarts after an oil change. 6 will put me at the maximum oil level on the guage (not the mid-point). About 5.5 quarts will get me to the mid-point. I would not put in less than 5 quarts or more than 6 without checking your level (even though that means driving the car).

The filter housing cap is plastic. You may be able to turn it by hand but a better way is to use a special cap wrench. Mine has a nut on top the same size as the drain plug. So I don't have to change what is on the ratchet.

I have tried getting the car level but I don't think it makes a significant difference in terms of how much oil comes out. My current method is to use ramps I made from 2x8s to get the front end up 4.5 inches which is enough I can get under there to change it (barely). I have also used little 1.5 inch tall quasi-ramps to raise it enough to get my jack under it and then jacked it. But jacking our cars isn't super simple with the plastic boxes on the side that will not directly take a jack.

I use a Mann 816X I order from Amazon. You might be able to get it at some autoparts stores.

Hey gang, I just bought my 128i and i will need an oil change soon so found this interesting. Haven't looked under, so I don't even know where to put my floor jack yet, but maybe it makes a difference in how the car is tilted so the oil may not drain completely. Too much to one side, or too high in the front will cause the oil to shift to the side or rear of the pan, and not completely drain?

I have used Mobil 1 15w50 in the E36 M3 and the E34 M5 exclusively...are these N52 engines that fussy that they need 0w40? I tried 0w50 in the M5 years ago and the oil pressure light would come on when warmed up and idling. Didn't like that.....

Thanks, Bill K

I hope you didn’t use 15w50 in the N52. Per the owner’s manual, the options are 0w30, 0w40, 5w30 and 5w40.
0w40 have been in use since the E39/E46 generations. An oil change at the dealer these days is mostly likely 0w30.
