To me it doesn't sound right either and would be a waste of time, but if the dealer is performing this clean one would think this is under guidance/instructions from bmw hq?

Thanks for posting what service tech said. Nowadays we all have to be smart about our car's maintenance. Totally agree re cleaning may be under the guidance of BMW HQ. If it's covered under warranty, I'd let them do it. If it wasn't, I'd do it once and observe the outcome. And, of course, I'd post my experience (mistake or otherwise) for all to learn.

Hmm the trouble I have with this method is that they have stated it may require a few attempts to fully clear, and also one has no way of 'seeing' if the valves are clean whereas with walnut blasting you can physically see the valves...

So yeah I think I would rather do the walnut blasting myself personally...

As far as I know, the only way BMW say to clean the intake valves is with the walnut shell method.
Yea, I think this is what's going on. Maybe they're thinking of running a Seafoam-type cleaner through the engine. Either way, anything short of physical abrasion will not get rid of built-up carbon.

How much does the walnut blasting run for at the dealer?

Lots. Think it was about £450 at my dealer. Not cheap to fix a problem caused by BMW's design.

It is 100% safe for remaining media to be burnt off in the comsution chamber.

Yes, that is correct. It is 100% safe when done properly.

When this is performed is a plug change typically included in the service price?
Seems to only make sense to change the plugs while the head is off and it seems the labor charge to do so should be less as well?
