n54 135i manual to mod vs A45 AMG 2016 Facelift
Hello
Hoping to gather some thoughts re trading my 135i 08 manual 73kkms, for a 2016 A45 update . My car is stock at the moment, I think I'm getting bored. Second option, pondering spending 5k on the Bimmer, ( update brakes, coilovers, exhaust system, ECU reflash, downpipe CAI ), Will customising the N54 with the above bring about a new beast - will she drive completely different ? I have driven the 2015 A45 and liked it. Missed the N54 straight 6 sound though. Though AWD, the A45 does handle very well! Dual Clutch can be boring but haven't ever owned an auto, I might(?) enjoy not riding the clutch in city driving! ( Do prefer the straight 6 exhaust note though, also looked at m135i LCI. It's N55 engine vs the "racy-ness" of the AMG ! ... ) Perspective anyone ?? Budget would be $75k, or spend $5k on the N54.. problem is I've never driven or been in a modded n54 to gauge what she'll turn into ! |

Your comment that dual clutch is boring suggests to me that you don't really drive hard and you're more of the cruising type. If you're capable of really pushing the car dual clutch is a gift from the gods. With this in mind, I'd say go with the newer mercedes as a reasonably quick, sleek daily driver. No reason in pouring a bunch of money into an older car that you'll only rip 0-60 and maybe top out on the freeway at night once or twice.

The 1 has more performance potential for less money than the amg. Just some software with new spark plugs will "bring about a new beast" add a fmic and the right suspension mods, some sticky wider tires and the 1 series is an absolute blast to drive on winding backroads.

Going from a stock 135i to even lightly modded is a very different car. Downpipes, intercooler, spark plugs, coil packs and stage 2 tune (MHD or Cobb) is a very powerful package. Add some coilovers, subframe bushes & M3 control arms and the stock floatiness will be transformed too.

thanks all.
Booked myself in at Advan - going tostart with coils/ sparkies and a JB4 . Hopefully feel re-engaged ! I do push her hard, and enjoy having a clutch and stick to change gears rather than a paddle/ computer, hence being a little put off by the A45, though i do agree on the track DSG is a treat. The new m135/235 needs to be a special order as they come standard with the 8 speed ! BMW Sydney said 1/200 m135, m235's are manuals.. and the M2 is over budget unfortunately . Cheers ! |

Keep the N54, the E82 still looks pretty modern and you'll be near 450 crank HP for under $1k. Throw on coils, subfrane bushings and Dinan camber plates and you have a great track car if that's your cup of tea.
