Help me out with bolt ons

Hi all,

Now that the Aussie $ is the highest it's ever been compared to the US, I am wanting to take advantage. Here is the situation;

* I live in a city that gets quite hot during summer
* I have an 09 135i auto
* I have JB3 1.4 (will probably get the chip to 2.0)
* I have an intake

Everything else is stock. I am thinking DP's or FMIC or both. I am a little worried about DP's and warranty.

Will just having a FMIC be ok with running map7 on 98RON fuel (93? in the US)? I know that running the DP's would be ok though correct?

Would I make that much more power running DP's instead of the FMIC?

I would consider Meth, but didn't like the tank in the boot as I use it a fair bit.

Any help or advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Mate if you're worried about warranty, I don't think METH is even a consideration!

DPs give way more power than the IC, and for similar or less money. Just have to learn to put them on/off, then start avoiding the dealer and doing your own oil changes. Only go in if necessary.

BUT... Meth sure is addicting.

I vote FMIC until you're either cool enough with your SA/dealership to know they won't be a dick about mods or you pass your warranty period.

I think it comes down to want you really want and you need to weigh up the pros and cons like anything else.

I've often compared these 2 mods and I think both are good in their own ways. Here is my take, hope it helps.

The advantages of the FMIC are that -
1. It will give you some gains especially with your JB3 - 3rd and 4th gear.
2. It's a lot bigger so it will function much better, keep the temps down - beneficial for car.
3. It's completely bolt-on if you go with this option - comparitively easy install.
4. I personally think it makes the car look a lot better - more aggressive.
5. It is legal - no problems with defects or insurance.

The disadvantages of the FMIC are that -
1. Warranty - You always run the risk with mods.
2. It's quite expensive, also downpipes might work out cheaper considering shipping, install etc.
3. It's heavier than the stock FMIC by a few kilos.

The advantages of catless downpipes are -
1. Huge power gains, especially with JB3. Easily the 1st or 2nd best power mod for N54 platform.
2. Price is cheap for power gains compared to other power mods - fmic, intake etc.
3. Releases huge back pressure being caused by the cats - beneficial for car.
4. Relatively simple install - can be done at workshop easily.
5. Small weight saving.

The disadvantages of downpipes are -
1. It is illegal - defects, fines and insurance.
2. Warranty - dealership probably won't be too keen.
3. The added noise and smell might be issues.

I'd get catted downpipes I got a 30kw atw gain from putting catted downpipes on and they aren't illegal.

Interesting... that's a decent gain! 417whp is very good with those mods isn't it? Was the 30rwkw dynoed after all your mods put in?

Yeah before I had the downpipes I dynoed 280kw atw and after I got 311kw. I was surprised they made so much, especially being catted but Terry has always said they make good gains.

Also seeing as your from Aus I would just have to warn you not to get cp-e downpipes, you need downpipes that have the O2 sensors in the same place as our factory setting as because of the rhd steering shaft I couldn't get mine to fit and had to pay $450 to get them rewelded so they would fit. I was pretty disappointed so just a heads up.

Can you post up your dyno sheets and describe your mods in more detail?

98 RON is equivalent to US 93/94 octane.

I now have both. I loved the DP's but I feel the benefits of the IC more. And I'm in Germany (much colder climate) I'd get your air and oil temps down first and that will support any future mods. Any other mods are just going to add to the horrible heat soak a stock IC will give you, then your car pulls timing and you've lost your added power.

After a tune there is no better modification than meth. I would highly suggest you get a meth kit, it is much easier to reverse for dealer visits than you might think. Your car will be transformed with meth far more than DPs or FMIC.
