I hate to say but they are quite wrong. BMW will focus in the next year on EfficientDynamics and smaller cars. There will be a few cars derived from the 1 Series, keeping a smaller size and very fuel efficient.

The 1 will definitely get a new design since they need to stay competitive on the European market as well, and the 1er is the perfect candidate.

They have to meet CAFE standards too, and getting rid of the 1'er would not help that.

My guess: Next change wiil probably be the new 4 cylinder twin turbo engine. May coincide with new hatches for the US market. May leverage some of the X1 work (larger size than existing hatches), but not be an SUV. All of the car makers are facing a enormous challenges with sales dropping everywhere. Probably the best BMW can hope for is that enough people in the upper classes continue to buy enough cars (5s, 6s, 7s) to keep them alive. They certainly won't be competing with low prices.
