How Do I Lock My Car?

I walked out to lock my car last night. I hit the button on the dash, but the doors did not lock. I here the solenoid, but they will not lock. It is like I have the key fob inside the car, and it will not lock. I came inside and the book said the central locking button should also lock the vehicle. I have only locked from the door handles, but I should be able to lock without the fob. I have CA, but what am I missing here.

The car won't lock if the drivers door is open (so that you don't accidentally leave you key in your car)

Aren't you supposed to have the key with you when you lock it?

You can lock yourself in the car ( with the dash button ), or lock the doors with a window open, but to properly lock it you need the key with you

The central locking button, is designed to lock the car when you are inside it. It will NOT lock the doors if the drivers door is open (so that you don't lock your keys in). You also cannot push the drivers doorlock knob down when the drivers door is open.

If you want to lock your car without the key, get in from the passenger side, lock the doors via the central locking button, open the passenger door, get out - push the knob (The black thing that pops up when you open the door) down and close the door.

Car is now locked.

Broken1 I dont want to go off topic but I see from the pic of your car that you don't have a front license plate number. I also don't have a front numer plate only at the back. Do you ever get hassled or pulled over for not having it.

I'm still in luck.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but I attract the police, so I do have it. In my first week of having plates, I had the back plate only, I got pulled over twice for not having a front plate. So I double sided taped one on. In the photo - I've just photoshoped it out. :-/

You have been lucky.

Take a laugh at this. From Pietersburg to Joburg on the higway I have gone through no less than 7 road blocks and 2 speed fines, but not once was confronted about my "missing" front number plate.

Don't know what that means then. I'm still cruising South Africa with only my rear number plate showing.

Thanks, it works. It should be easier then getting in and out of the car to lock it, but now I know. Problem resolved.

BMWs have had this feature at least since the E 30 series AFIK

when I used to work at an independant shop (BMW only) we'd lock customer's keys in their cars to help them pick up after hours.

you close all doors, lock them all with you inside the car (with you on the passenger side)

unlock passenger door only

exit

lock passenger door (the rest of doors are already locked)

shut door

it's now locked, without using a key (at least as of a couple of years ago, they may have changed the software on the locks, but this worked on E36, E46 and others)

oh yeah, broken1 beat me to it!!

dude u have ca, y don't u use that by touching the ridges outside if u don't want to deal with pushing buttons. don't tell me u expected the doors to be locked by pressing the console lock button while u was still inside the car. maybe u might have misunderstood some advertisement on how ca works or something.
