Xenon Question

I just took delivery of new 330xi. It is my first BMW and I must say so far I love the car. Driving it is awesome. This is the first car that I have owned that has Xenon headlights and in my old car (a Volvo) I had gotten into the habit of leaving the light switch in the “on” position all the time. Is there any disadvantage to doing this with the xenon’s?

Thanks and also a belated thanks for all of the great advice I have gotten by reading this forum.

-Scott

Sometimes I'll leave the "angel eyes" on, but I think leaving the xenons on 24/7 is a waste (not sure of what, but still a waste)...

My xenons are on all the time that my engine is running (a function of the daytime running lights). Nothing detrimental at all. It does make the car a lot more visible though, which I suppose is a boon for road safety.

Drive safe.

Your xenons are not automatically on all the time. Don't DRLs use the inner halogen bulbs??? I turned mine off.

Hey scott.

Rather leave your lights in the "Auto" position, and get them to activate DRL's on your car.

However, if you wanted to leave them on the "on" position full time, I doubt it can do any harm - you will see a slightly higher fuel consumption because the Xenon's draw more energy then the DRL's but it would be very marginal.

I'm not worry about higher fuel ......... Is this really true when you use your Xenon ? I thought xenon bulb use less energy than hallogen bulb.

you might want to think twice before getting DRL's activated on your car - it will mess up the Angel Eye look...

You are 100% right.
Xenon uses far less energy in use than halogen, but they need high voltage to ignite.
I like having mine on all the time i drive. (no angel eyes yet, see garage )

What do you mean? My e46 "compact"?

A car which never made it to the states (except the e36 compact, i think). It is a hatchback version, quite popular in germany. Looks different i think. But only likes with m-sport, see yourself...

How do you turn off the DRLs? Are they standard with the new 3series? I agree the angel eyes look much nicer than DRLs.

Non-idrive cars:
Pre-Sept: Go to your dealer.
Sept and after: It's through the on board computer. Check the manual.

I also disable my DRL. Hate the look during the day. I also like driving with the halos on during the day, but a few times i've forgotten to turn them off before leaving the car. The car does chime but sometimes I get out too quickly and forget - or don't really notice it. Do these lights turn off automatically after some time when the car is off?

As Abulia says above, I seriously agree. Nothing better than having your lights on to notify your fellow motorists that you are there, in inclimate weather even more so.

im not quite sure how DRL can be associated with a sexual orientation or a country. unless they equip all cars up there with the DRLs. I had DRLs on my e46 and i must admit that i really didnt like them. and it would seriously mess up the awsome angle-eye look.
