IMO keep your money and buy an old SEAT Marbella. Fine transportation. Drove one of those to La Cote D'azur in college; just shifted it into 4th gear, kept the gas pedal mashed down to the floor and got it up to about 60 - downhill.

It all depends how much tax your government is charging you, and how many cars they can sell in your country In a country where everything costs so much like japan, it's still cheaper than countries like korea or "norway" even though they supposedly have a import car tax rate of about 30%. Same tax rate in Korea, but since BMW sells about 250 bimmers a month (not just the 3 series) they have to sell it at a high price to make up for the cost to sell it here. And yes, a fully loaded (actually every car here is pretty much fully loaded) s500 costs about $210,000 and I bet it costs more in norway lol |

let me give you some more info:
in Nov 2004 I paid in todays ex rate $125,000 for a 18 month old CL600 Bi Turbo, this car was depreciating $3,500 a month. After 9 months I started to get nervous & bailed out into a 996 Turbo taking a hit on the CL of $52,000 taking into consideration the dealers margin which hurt me big time. This was the biggest loss that I had ever made on a car. The 996 Turbo was a great car apart from the ongoing reliability isssues that I had with her. After owning the 996 Turbo for 4 months I traded in for a new E91 330d M Sport which I am taking delivery of in December ( I hope) I have to say I am looking forward to owning a car which will be more practical & economical than my last 2 previous mistakes. However, I still think the price of these E90/91 has hit the max since I last owned one. As my original post asks, do you think this is a fair price for this type of car ???? |

What do you guys in EU do to make the money to afford these things? My household income is about 130-140k US. It's not a huge stretch for me to afford my 330, but my wife would certainly prefer I buy something cheaper to own and operate.
Or are you financing these things for 15yrs? I have friends in London that laugh when we start talking salaries ... they must make a ton more than I do, because it seems like they're always doing some remodel / addition or taking some trip to an exotic place. But their eyes get wide when they see my car. Are salaries in the UK really that much higher than the US? |

My ability to afford my car doesn't have much to do with my salary. Shrewd investment in property bought me my E90.

I am sure the HK or Singapore members will chime in sooner or later. Their import tax is 100% or more.
We got it good in the states.

Everyone here does realize Americans work more hours than everyone but the Japanese, take less vacation than any other nation, pay for education, health care, have the most expensive housing costs outside of London and Tokyo, have to take it up the ass for divorce with divorce rates around 50%...
Here in California, your income is taxed federally up to 35%, another 8% to the state, another 7.25 - 8.75% for purchases, 6% for social security, and 4.5% for Medicare. Hey, we saved the world so everyone could enjoy their German car without needing to chant "Seig Heil"...of course this last part is not serious. Although we did save your Euro heinies. Let's all ignore every war we've been involved with since then ok. And as hard as it may be to believe, I'm a hard line liberal. |

It is a car, if you are looking at them from the standpoint of being an investment (even one you inherently know is going to loose money) you have some serious issues with how you handle money. Especially if you are messing around with exotica like 996 Turbos and CL600s. If you are getting 'nervous' about the depreciation on something like that, and you 'bail out' of a BiTurbo MB luxury car and into a Porsche- you never should have bought either in the first place. Those cars are for people who seriously don't care abou depreciation- if that isn't you, you shouldn't have been stretching so far up in the first place. |

Living in Greece
Well if you say so let's talk about 2-3 things that are very important. For instance with a 18000 Euros annual income you have to pay for medical insurance (about 2000 Euros/year for a family of 4), education (about 4000 Euros/year), etc. If you want to buy an appartment (about 90 square metres) you have to spend about 200.000 Euros. The petrol cost us about 1.00 Euro per litre. These are some examples of what a greek citizen has to pay every year. Have you anything to say?
