First Sight of Production ActiveE All Electric 1-series. Shows 1-series LCI parts.
As reported on 1ADDICTS HOMEPAGE
We bring you the first photos of the all-electric BMW Concept ActiveE 1-series production model. This car was spotted during a commercial photo shoot. Compared to concept version, the production ActiveE receives more conventional wheels and tires, a different front bumper, a new hood with a bump, new headlight design, and "E Drive" badges. The upcoming lifecycle impulse (aka "LCI" or "facelift) changes to the 1-series coupe and cabrio are seen here with new rear and front headlight lenses with LED technology and more reprofiled aerodynamics in the bumpers. The 1-series coupe and cabrio LCI, along with the 1M and Active E will be seen for the first time at the NAIAS in Detroit this early January. Much like Mini Cooper's "Mini E" program taking place right now, BMW will introduce this electrified 1-series coupe to drivers in a few select markets. Metro New York, Southern California, Northern California and Boston have been chosen as the testing grounds. Also similar to the Mini E electric car, the ActiveE is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, which propels the ActiveE from 0-60 in 8.5 seconds to a top speed of 90mph. The juice is stored in a chained-together group of lithium-ion batteries – quite similar to how the Tesla Roadster is set up. The ActiveE is claimed to have a range of about 100 mile per charge.

When I was at the Geneva Autoshow, the Active E Concept display was comparing the car to the 118d, 120d and 120i. The Active E is slightly faster than the 118d and slightly slower than the other cars (by a second to a second and a half) The range was quoted as 100km... about 62 miles.
Realistically, with a 60 -100 mile range, all that matters is how fast you can get from 0 to about 40 mph and how a car goes around corners. The whole electric idea is neat, but BMW/MINI keep abandoning the DC area, which is ripe for commuter electric cars. Heck, maybe someone here would spearhead a movement for free parking in the city and waving the HOV requirements in return for driving a clean, efficient car (That still looks and handles like a BMW!) I hope the car sells and ends up here in the DC area. I don't use a car for commuting, so it wouldn't do much for me personally, but if I did, I would certainly consider it. Not only does this e 1er have a power dome but it is also sporting some new headlights and tail lights. LCI-II ?
I like the tail lights but I am not feeling those front headlight eyebrows at all! I kind like the front spoiler/bumper too. The lower rockers look different too from the ones on a 135i. |

The changes are coming for all 1er Coupe and Cabrio models and will be formally announced in December along with the 1 M Coupe.
Changes are imminent because when the 1er Coupe was introduced in summer 2007 it was a new vehicle. The original 1er Sporthatch was introduced in 2004 and received it's life cycle impluse in 2007. And is therefore heading for it's replacement next year. Both Coupe and Cabrio are now moving on to it's half way point in it's life cycle. And with the launch of the LCI Coupe and Cabrio we will see the advent of the 1M Coupe and the Active E Test car. Changes to the Coupe and Cabrio are seen here with new rear and front headlight lenses with LED technology and more reprofiled aerodynamics in the bumpers ,new exterior colors and interior trims and the addition of some new (to the 1er) navigation, media, phone technology. The 1er Coupe and Cabrio Life cycle Impulse , along with the 1M and Active E will be seen for the first time at the NAIAS in Detroit this early January. |

Not liking the lights at all.
Was also hoping the tail/rear lights were going to be more like 3er and 5er with more red and less of the white strip. Oh well, can only hope 1M doesn't get this. |

The changes will bring the 1er Coupe and Cabrio into line with the forthcoming F20 1er Sporthatch in which some of the reprofiling especailly the semi-circles that dip under the grille from the headlights start replicate the front of the new sporthatch as do the shape of the outer intakes and the LED "eyebrows".
The 1M inherits the new LED rear and headlights but will use the typical M smoked appearance. The Coupe will not be replaced until late 2012. The cabrio will not be replaced until mid-2013. |

No I am talking about F22 and F23 the next generation 1er Coupe and Cabrio.
We are not getting a replacement for them until early 2013. The car in the photographs is the LCi of the current 1er Coupe, a car that was introduced in 2007. It has just reached it's half-way life cycle. The refresh is to keep the Coupe current alongside a new model, similar to what the 3er/3er coupe does when it is time for their Life Cycle Impulse. The 1er Sporthatch is replaced first by the F20 1er,the Coupe arrives later down the line. |
