2011 Msport package content?
Does anyone know what the 2011 msport package contains? Is it purely cosmetic other than wider rear rims? I read pro reviews which say they have done some suspension tweaks.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure all the 135i's come with the same "sport" suspension (unless you specifically add the BMW Performance Suspension). The M package from what I can recall (I have a 2011) comes with different 'M' wheels (no wider than the regular set), sport tires, a thicker steering wheel, sport seats, and 'M' badges on various places. Keep in mind that the sport package also comes with the same sport seats.

The Msport package also adds the shadowline exterior trim, anthracite headliner, and the M sport steering wheel.

What you read is that the stock springs changed from being progressive to linear in 2011 - therefore, prior years have a little more squatting/rolling before the stiffer part of the springs kick in. Someone on this forum just purchased my stock springs after I installed the performance suspension, to replace his non-2011 springs. He will probably provide feedback once he has them installed. They are actually being delivered to his address today as we speak.

Don't forget the only part of that package that actually changes the cars performance! Along with the various M goodies, like the steering wheel, wheels, door sills and shifter, not to mention the very nice headliner, the M Sport package also raises the electronic speed limiter from 130mph to 155mph!

I'm waiting to hear from the guy who purchased my stock springs to replace his stock springs on his non-2011 car. He is an autocrosser, so his review should be rather interesting. By the way, when you go to the dealer, even within the same year model, there are multiple different sets of springs (2-3) that could have come on the car based on the packages from factory. I found this to be rather interesting when I was being shown this information at the dealer. |

I don't think anyone mentioned the front bumper - or is that just stock on the 135?

155 mph on mine! But yes, you are correct. When you order eitehr sport package you get option #840 (?) which gets you the higher speed limiter. The speedo will read 155 mph (250 kph) but the car will realy only be doing 240 kph. I know bc of my Navi(TomTom) and my coded speedo - that reads true velhicle speed. Dackel |

The M-sport package also gets you the "aerodynamic" bits - front and rear bumpers plus side-sills. Makes the car look a lot better IMHO, which is why we ordered it on my wife's 2011 128i convertible that is due in early March. Other than the increased speed limiter and sport suspension/seats, it's mostly an appearance thing. Wish they'd had one for the E92 back in '07.

I also forgot to mention the M Sport dead pedal and handbrake. Something else I haven't seen mentioned on here is the paddle shifters the 128i receives. On previous models, (2008-2010) either paddle could upshift or downshift depending on if you pushed or pulled. On the 2011 128i, just as on the 2011 135i with DCT one paddle is designated for upshifts, while the other is for downshifts, despite if you push or pull.
As for the top speed, The May 2008 article in Car and Driver titled "Sawed-off Shotgun" listed the change in the top speed given by the sport and M sport packages at 13, giving those models a 143mph top speed, however I got out one of the brouchures I received from the dealership that stated the top speed was 150. After checking the specs page on the BMW website the top speed is listed at 149. To further complicate the problem, Jeremey Clarkson and the London Times list the top speed as 155 (although I realize this is probably the least trustworthy source), while I have managed the peg the needle past the 160 mark (I am quite aware that this reading is unreliable, but have been unable to make another top speed run with a GPS reading my true top speed). I do find the one mph difference between official BMW sources most puzzling though. I do know one thing, I'm counting down the days til I get to 50,000 miles so I can get a tune and determine this beast's true top speed! Last edited by N55_NOLE; 01-30-2011 at 07:26 PM.. |

That's not true. I'm not sure on the 128i, but on the 135i with DCT the left paddle downshifts and the right paddle upshifts only.

You're right, I got mixed up while typing that, I'll edit my original reply. I meant to say on the 2008-2010 models either paddle can be used to upshift or downshift based on a push pull motion, but on the 2011 128i one paddle is used for upshifting and one for downshifting, despite wither or not you push or pull.

Maybe a 2011 owner with the regular sport package will chime in, since the BMWUSA website doesn't even mention those goodies being included in the M sport package, much less the regular sport pack. Last edited by N55_NOLE; 01-30-2011 at 11:17 PM.. Reason: spelling |

Thanks for all your fine input 1ers you do know your stuff. I ordered this package primarily for the superb sports seats secondly the rims. Where I live it's impossible to get a test drive of a real 135i. I have had tests of several different 128is and was truly impressed. I had a test arranged in sept of last year on a machine very similar to what I ordered but the car was hijacked by larger dealer in Toronto before it got here. The next week another one came and I had an appointment to test drive it but when I arrived in the afternoon was told that someone had purchased it straight from pdi that morning and unless they backed out before the mandatory 48 hour cool down period testing wasn't possible. They then offered me a 335i test but my wife was quite adamant we were downsizing from 3er and was afraid I might opt for the 335i. I have owned 3ers for the past 15 years all from this dealership and for the most part have been treated well both by the personnel and the cars thus a leap of faith sight unseen custom order. Now I have to credit my faith also to glowing pro reviews and this superb enthusiasts site.
