Short Shift Kit and regrets anyone?

I am looking into getting a short shift kit (uuc or rogue) for my 1M.

Has anyone installed a short shift kit and had regrets? Feedback appreciated thanks.

+1 on this post.

For daily driving the stock setup is really a good mix of positive feedback and easy throws. Not sure if I'd want to give that up but an SSK is on my mod list.

Feedback....

Me too! I love my Performance SSK. And if you order all the parts separately you save some bucks. The SSK is a must have mod I think.

FYI...

shifter throws...

N54 = 80 mm's
N55 = 70 mm's

Perf SSK(N54) 55 mm's.

Went to my dealer yesterday. The factory SSK is 342, VAT excluded. Work time should be less than one hour. But there is a problem: at my dealer, they keep saying that the kit is intended for 135/335, but not for 1M. Don't we have the same gearbox as these ?

N55 and 1M have a different gear box than the N54 cars(like my 135i).

There was a thread where someone installed the Perf SSK on a 1M a few weeks ago. It worked. You might try searching for it.

N54 135i = 80 mm's shifter throws
N55 & 1M = 70 mm's shifter throws
N54 Perf SSK = 55 mm's shifter throws

Hi BLACK-M, (and Hi Dackel !)

So you had the "135" factory SSK installed on your 1M ? Could you give us some feedback about cost, man-hours and feel ? Thanks, Dee-Jay.

I have the Rogue kit... and I´m not sure if I like it...

The kit does its job, very short shifts, but the shifts are now harder... to select the reverse even more harder, you need a strong wrist...

I don't know if the exchange of comfort to sportiveness worth in this case.

Or, I´m really getting old!

I'd say this is a fair and honest opinion. 1M can be very mild at low speed around town and a gearbox that is easy to play with helps out.

The stock throws are pretty damn good (especially by stock E92 M3 and E46 M3 standards) with minimal effort and reassuring feel. I have yet to drive a better all around stock setup on the 1M aside from the new 991 Porsche. Looking to go for an SSK but do not want to ruin the simple yet effective stock shift setup. Hmm decisions..

EDIT: I don't want notch city

No need to fix a problem which doesn't really exist. Stock throws and feel are close to perfect. I'll see if a CDV delete make it even better and that's about it for me.

As far as I am concerned, nothing beats S2000 stock shifter, but 1M pretty nice.

Here is Rogue Engineering 1M SSK. It back dates the shifter arm/carrier to the N54 unit. That in part is why its so much money.

Turner Motorsports SSK... its just the lever but its adjustable...
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-12...2-1m-2011.aspx

I also see no reason why you couldn't just order the BMW Perf shift lever(like the part in the Turner kit) and install that. That ought to give you 90% of the short shifter for very little money(~$70)

Bmw 1m short throw shift kits

I still couldn't find the thread I was originally thinking about. I remember someone installed JUST the Perf SS lever from the Perf SSK in a 1M. I see no reason why this would not work. And it should give you 90% of the short shifter feel for very little money.

If you know 1///M Rider, he is in your area and has the Rogue SSK on his 1M. You can try it on his car and decide if it is too notchy for your taste. Don't think you can PM him though, his status shows as...banned!

Lotusboy,

Sorry for late reply. I think you can search ob forum on step by step instruction fir DIY. I paid mine only $90 from my local dealer and installation not more than $20 for labour. Feel: first and second a bit tight third and so on are sex.

Hope this will help
