Stett makes a good one. Its basically a pipe with a filter tho for performance.
for sound just take any open air DCI. They dont make a difference performance wise tho. |

Best for performance I would say is the MS drop in with scoops (a mild improvement in sound too).
For sound and a potential drop in performance then any of the open filters like BMS or AFE will do it for you

you talking the bms dci or just drop in? I have been looking around this week and was going to just order aFe drop in with scoops but it seems like the dci set up (aFe or BMS) provides a MUCH bigger Hp/tq increase over just the drop in. Maybe one of the vendors can chime in and correct me if I'm wrong?

Now it seems to me that if you get an open DCI along with a better intercooler that should mitigate the ambient heat from the engine bay and you'll end up having better airflow. But this is my approach, opinions will (and do) vary. |

BMS drop-in filter in stock box. IT is well made and gives a slight increase in top end power with a tune. Also you can hear the intake slightly more and the blow-off sound on throttle closing. I felt no diff in responsiveness with my DCT but Sport+ button is for this

gotta love the vast mis-information in this thread. a few points: -terry with BMS and other reputable n54 tuners have proven that scoups & drop in filters don't do shit for performance -dci's from bms/vishnu/eas are the best open dci element intakes, as they have the least amount of restrictions. afe, injen, etc have bends and narrow pipes, which cause restrictions -cold air intakes from stett or similar do slightly lower iat's, but i haven't seen convincing evidence that the single filter element provides the same amount of air as dci's. -mr.5 style closed box intake w/ snorkel or similar may be the best best for low ait's, low wastegate duty cycle, quiet operation, etc. |

As advertised on Terry's (BMS) website:
BMS DROP-IN FILTER: Exclusive Features Improves Horesepower and Torque More airflow than stock paper filter CASE CLOSED. A guy on e90 post just did logging on his 335i at the drag strip with a COBB - the DCI actually gave him worse results than the stock airbox! |

i saw dynos of like 20 hp increase on e90post. I have DCI and have a BMS stock box filter in mail.. gonna install stock box as soon as i get it in. also, at a dyno event i saw a guy w/ stock box get more hp than me.. and i was runnin a higher tune map.

so you dyno'ed (with dci) at less than the stock box with drop in? Just makes it more confusing because most of the drop in manufacturer's don't make a hp claim, whereas you see like 27hp+ gains on posts on the DCI (like aFe). Seems to be an issue of debate as to effectiveness. I am having a hard time rationalizing a $400 aFe system if in the end a could throw in a new FMIC and leave the intake alone with better gains.

I've got the bms dci. I don't have a clue what it did performance wise by itself because I installed a JB+ at the same time. Sure sounds cool though.
BTW: this car is a beast with just the JB+, I can't imagine it with the higher tunes out there. |

I bought some DCI for my 135i + SSTT back in the day. At first I felt it gave a little better throttle response but I couldnt tell if it made more power. Then summer came around and I did a little testing. I spent a lot of time swapping out the stock airbox with the DCI and found an improvement (to my disappointment!) with believe it or not ...the STOCK AIRBOX!
After doing further research I discovered that DCIs could hurt performance. I am glad someone has continued that with the COBB AP. So I kept the stock airbox for daily driving in traffic. My car felt a lot better plus I have to say I eventually got tired of the vacuum cleaner sound. BMW really did design the stock airbox well. There is A REASON why they spent $$$ designing a cold air feed duct from the front of the car. **I think Mr 5 understands this principle well - hence his new intake design which works**. I also note the stock airbox has many fins inside - I am guessing to promote laminar flow of air (decrease turbulence) & velocity? Perhaps if you were pushing 15-16psi the DCI would be of more benefit down the strip.... BTW i am running a DCT Z4 35is these days (and it's noticeably quicker than my 135i!). I have kept the intake stock although I still have my BMS DCI's lying around! IF I decide to push out the numbers with a procede or JB4 then I may consider putting the DCI back in as it is a much easier install in the Z4 engine bay. Like most of us here, I'm just an "enthusiast" or "hobbyist" or whatever term you want to use and don't do this stuff for a living. If you've got something of real value to add, please do so because I'm all for learning more about my car. Just saying "this is stupid" without actually explaining why doesn't do anyone much good. |

Christ, do these threads really keep popping up? I'm no repost Nazi, but this is beyond annoying.
Get a $20 hooker and zip tie her to the front bumper, insert a $20 every 30m to provide adequate flow. |
