Rear Ended
I was rear ended last Tuesday by a young woman driving a Volkswagen Jetta, which resulted in a deep gash and scratch to the metal panel underneath the paint on my rear bumper. My insurance company notified me that they will waive the deductible, send me a list of shops to get it replaced and/or painted/restored, and pay for all costs involved.
I am located around the Santa Monica area with close proximity to the 10 and 405. I was wondering if anyone knows a good shop that is preferably certified to perform BMW repair and paint work. My car color is Jet Black. I am worrying sick about how the paint will come out. I hope they don’t cheapen up and use non-genuine BMW paint. Alternatively, how would I go about my insurance company if I wanted to replace my current non-rear diffuser bumper with a rear-diffuser bumper? Any insight on others’ experiences for panel/bumper repaints or restoration would be helpful. Thanks in advance! |

You can ask for the quote to be the msport bumper, and should it cost more you can pay the difference yourself. I'm unsure of if all insurance companies would go for this however. I assume they would only let it happen if the bumper actually need replacing, yours only seems to need a repaint imo.

Just get it reprinted, I got rear ended 4 days ago which resulted in a deep dent in my rear bumper. I don't think insurance will replace it if there's no evident damage besides some chipped off paint. Nevertheless it sucks anyway.

I would pick a few of the places they list to get it repaired and go get a quote from them first. Since the insurance company is doing you a solid and waiving the deductible I wouldn't try to pull one over on them. Shop around after you get the quote see if you can find a bumper that you want already painted and if the price is the same or close tell the insurance company you will be supplying the parts and if they would pay for the labor to the shop and price for parts to you. They might go for that. When I messed up my front end I got a quote and they asked if I wanted the money or to pay the dealer. I could have taken the 6k and got a different bumper and different hood and maybe new fenders for that much used, and paid just a little out of pocket for the paint. But I wanted the warranty that came with the parts and labor. I would say tell the insurance company exactly what you want to do. Sometimes they might work with you since there always trying to fight off people trying to ef them over.

OUCH! But yes, get M-Sport bumper so you can mount Perf Diffuser or something similar. On a typical case, insurance companies usually only agree on painting/repairing the bumper. You lucked out, I guess.
On a side note, I almost got rear ended yesterday. I was at a freeway and the traffic flow slowed down from 60mph to a 5mph crawl. Dude behind me was texting. I saw him coming in FAST. I just accelerated as far as I can, closed my eyes, and hoped for the best. The moment I heard tires screeching, my heart sank...when I looked back, all I can see was half of his hood and windshield. |

I would not worry too much about paint. Just use a repertable repair shop and they will take good care of you. As far as genuine paint is concerned BMW usually doesnt have their own paint shops anymore so they hire out for those services. They will either use 3M, BASF, Sherwin Williams or PPG. All of these manufacturers have the paint codes and can replicate paint exactly.
